“Those sound adorable.”

“They are. And the matching gloves have little bear paws on the palms.”

“Matching gloves?” I laugh. “I thought it was just hats.”

“I may have bought each of them a full knitted outfit. And I may also already have plans for a fall photoshoot. I know it’s a bit played out for twins to wear matching clothes all the time like those creepy girls from The Shining, but I mean, come on… how could I not?”

I couldn’t wipe the grin off of my face if I wanted to. “Well that all sounds great. Especially since I don’t need to worry about them being like the girls from The Shining. A matching brother and sister won’t be nearly as creepy.”

Kayla gasps. “What?! Did you find out? You’re having a boy and a girl?”

“We just found out yesterday.”

She squeals. “Luna, that’s amazing! I can’t wait to meet them. I’m going to hang up and buy them so many cute clothes.”

“I’m sure Yakov will love that. The stuff I’ve ordered has started arriving and he already thinks I’ve lost my mind.”

“He can think I’ve lost my mind, too. I don’t care. As if you don’t have enough room in that mansion for some baby clothes,” she snorts. There’s a beat before she asks, “Is Yakov excited?”

“I’ve never seen him so happy,” I tell her truthfully. “He is going to be such a good dad.”

Kayla goes quiet for a second. I’m sure she doesn’t believe me, but it’s only because she doesn’t know him. Once she does, she’ll see I’m right. “That’s great, Loon. I hope you’re happy too. You deserve that much.”

“I am, Kay. Truly. I’m—” I swallow down the lump in my throat. “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.”

“If that’s true, then I’m happy for you, too. All I want is for you to be happy.”

It is true. Every word of it. Even after being kidnapped, locked up, almost killed, and now pregnant, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Yakov is worth all of it.

I wake up as Yakov climbs into bed. I slide closer to him, nuzzling my face into the woodsy scent of his neck. “What time is it?” I whisper.

“Late.” He kisses the top of my head.

“I haven’t seen you all day.”

“Mariya and I wanted to finish painting. It took longer than I hoped.”

“It’s done?” I lift my head. “Can I see it?”

He gives me a firm look and holds up two fingers.

I groan. “Forty-eight hours for one glimpse of the room? You and your mother are running a prison camp, I swear.”

“If my mother hasn’t driven you crazy enough, you could call your mom.”

“Do you think I should?” I ask.

He shrugs. “She’s going to be their grandma. I’d understand if you wanted to have her around.”

Being around Yakov’s family has been nice, but it’s always poked at a bruise I didn’t even realize I have. My family has never been close the way his is. My mother doesn’t fawn over me and my brother has never cared much what’s going on in my life. I texted him that I was pregnant a few months ago and he never responded.

“I want her around, but I also want her to be different,” I explain. “I want her to want to be here.”

“You don’t think she does?”

I shrug. “It doesn’t seem like it. I haven’t heard from her in months. And when I did, it was only because I texted her. If she actually wanted to be part of my life, maybe I’d care more about her being part of our kids’ life. But as it is…”
