I need to get to the door. I’ll open the door and step into the hall. I can see nurses passing by the door right now. Someone out there will save me.

Save me from what? I’m not really sure. But something is wrong and I need to get out. Now.

I only manage two steps before Dr. Jenkins whirls around. He’s looking right at me now, his brows furrowed. “Where are you going?”

“Bathroom,” I lie. “I need to pee.”

He looks down at his phone and then back to me. “I’m almost done with my exam. Lie down while I finish.”

“I can’t hold it. You know how the third trimester can be.” I try for a smile, but my face is tight. My entire body is clenched, anticipating whatever is going to come next.

“I’m almost done,” he repeats. “Lie back and?—”

“You’re here until Yakov gets back, right? We have time.” I take another step. “I’ll just pee and?—”

“Sit down!” Dr. Jenkins roars.

I flinch back, the monitor behind me blaring my alarm into the quiet room.

“Sit down,” he says again with forced calm. “I’m almost done here.”

Get out. Now.

I take another step, but Dr. Jenkins is between me and the only way out before my foot even hits the floor. He looks into my eyes and he doesn't look tired; he looks anguished. Everything about him is sagging like he’s aged a decade in the last ten minutes.

“I’ll scream,” I warn. “If you don’t move, I’ll scream.”

He shakes his head slowly. “It won’t help. Fighting will only make it harder.”

“Make what harder? Dr. Jenkins, I don’t know what is going on, but Yakov can help. We can help you.”

He reaches for me and I pull back. But he doesn’t grab me, he grabs my IV pole. Between one blink and the next, he reaches into his pocket and pulls out a syringe. With practiced fingers, he injects the syringe into the tube of my IV.

“What are you?—”

“I’m sorry,” he says, looking deep into my eyes. “Forgive me, Luna. Please… forgive me.”

I shake my head. My vision is going dark around the edges. I feel dizzy. “Forgive you for…”

I can’t move my lips. Can’t move at all. My eyelids get heavy. As they close, I feel arms around my back lowering me to the bed.

Then… nothing.

YAKOV

As soon as Dr. Jenkins locks Luna’s door, I sweep the floor.

My phone keeps buzzing. Nik is trying to get in touch with me. But I can’t leave this floor until I know there is no threat.

The nurses at the station are the same women who were here at this time yesterday. Nik already ran background on them. They’re cleared.

Then I walk the halls, looking into each room as I pass. I recognize the other patients on the floor, so I make quick work of it. The two empty rooms at the end of the hall get a thorough scan to make sure no one is lurking inside.

It only takes a few minutes, but it feels like hours pass. It doesn’t help that Nik keeps calling. The only time the vibration stops is when I walk into the stairwell, but that’s because this is the worst spot for reception in the whole building. I take the stairs two at a time down to the main lobby and step out through the sliding doors.

It’s the first time I’ve felt the sun on my face in days. I take a deep breath, trying to enjoy it before this next round of shit hits the fan.
