Then my phone vibrates.

This time when I answer it, Nik’s voice is clear.

“Get her out of there right fucking now, Yakov!” Nik yells. “Can you hear me? Am I breaking up? Get her out! Now!”

I’m on the phone with Nik, but my phone is blowing up. Text after text after text comes through. I look down at the screen and see that they are all from Nik. All the messages I couldn’t get in her room, apparently.

“What the fuck is going on?” I ask as I open the text thread.

“Can you hear me?” he gasps.

“Yeah, I’m outside. The signal in Luna’s room is terrible.” Over the last couple days, it seems like it has actively gotten worse.

“Get her out!” Nik yells again… just as I read his messages.

He’s texted me twenty times. Each time with the same message.

It’s Jenkins.

It’s Jenkins.

It’s Jenkins.

It’s Jenkins.

It’s Jenkins.

My stomach hollows out. For the first time in my life, I’m frozen.

No. It can’t be. He wouldn’t.

“Yakov?” Nik barks. “Can you fucking hear me?”

“I can hear you. I can—What are you talking about? What did Jenkins do?”

I ask, but I already know.

I know how Pavel’s men were able to get past my security. Why they were waiting to ambush me at the safehouse. No one outside of my family knew where Luna and Mariya were staying.

No one…

Except Dr. Jenkins.

“He’s the man on the inside, Yakov,” Nik says, desperation laced in every word. “Jenkins is working for Pavel.”

It’s how the intruder got into my house even after I’d updated all of the security. Dr. Jenkins wasn’t at the house moments after Luna was attacked by sheer coincidence—it was a plan. He helped the attacker get through the gates.

“He’s with her,” I whisper.

“What?” Nik asks.

But I’m already barreling through the double doors and sprinting for the stairwell.

“Jenkins is alone with Luna right now,” I growl. “I left him with her. I told him to take care of her. I fucking trusted him.”

“You have to get her out,” Nik says. “I’ll call Isay and?—”

The beep lets me know the call has dropped. I shove my phone in my pocket and hurtle up the stairs as fast as my legs will carry me.
