I trusted that asshole and the entire time, he’s been working to kill Luna.

Now, I’m going to kill him.

I get to Luna’s floor and stop at the nurse’s station. The woman behind the desk smiles blandly, but it wipes clean when she really sees me.

“I need the keys to room 721. Now.”

She frowns. “The door shouldn’t be locked. You should be able to?—”

“Keys!” I snap. “Now!”

If I knock, I’ll just alert Jenkins to the fact that I’m back. He could carry out whatever he has planned before I get inside.

If he hasn’t already.

I shove the dark thought away as the nurse shakily hands me the key. “It’s the same key for every door on the floor,” she says. “You can bring it back to the desk when you’re?—”

I don’t hear the rest of the sentence. I’m already around the corner and running for Luna’s door.

I don’t stop to look through the glass. There isn’t time. I shove the key in the door, turn it, and throw the door open.

Dr. Jenkins is next to Luna’s bed. She’s asleep, her hands folded on top of the blanket. That’s all the information I have before I ram into the man’s shoulder. The air whooshes out of him as we connect. I shove him back and pin him against the wall by the neck.

“Yakov, what the hell are you doing?” Dr. Jenkins groans. “What’s happening?”

For a second, I think I made a mistake. Maybe Nik’s information was wrong. Maybe Dr. Jenkins is on our side.

Then I notice his right arm shift.

I twist to the side and slam his arm against the wall. His fingers are clamped around a syringe. If I hadn’t stopped him, he would have plunged it into my back.

I pry the syringe out of his hold and press the point of the needle to a vein in his neck. “Waste my time with lies and I’ll empty this in your bloodstream.”

Whatever is in the syringe, it’s not good. I can tell by how quickly the color drains out of his face. His lips are pale. He’s terrified.

I glance back at the bed and Luna is still sleeping. We’ve made enough noise that she should be awake.

My heart squeezes painfully. I take the pain out on Dr. Jenkins, twisting his wrist until I hear a snap.

“What did you do to Luna?”

“She’s alive!” he winces. Sweat is gathering on his forehead. “I gave her something to put her to sleep. I didn’t want her to be awake for what came next. It was a mercy.”

I twist his injured wrist more. Tendons pop, a sample of what’s coming. There won’t be any mercy for him.

“Who are you working for?” I snarl.

His eyes dart around the room. He’s searching for an escape, but there isn’t one. There’s not a chance in the world that he walks out of this room. It’s possible he doesn’t even make it through the rest of this conversation.

“I trusted you,” I growl, anger I can’t contain bubbling up in me. “I asked you to look after Luna and my babies and you were going to murder them. You sick fucking bastard.”

The doctor’s face crumples. He sags. I’m the only thing keeping him from falling to his knees.

“I’m sorry,” Dr. Jenkins sobs. Fat tears roll down his cheeks. “I’m sorry, Yakov.”

“Save your apology. Choke on it, for all I fucking care. What I want to know is who you are working for and why.” I drive my arm deeper into his sternum. I want to feel his ribs shatter like dried sticks. “I want to hear you try to explain yourself.”

He shakes his head, tears rolling down his neck. “I’m a hypocrite. I’m a worthless hypocrite. I’m so sorry, but… My family. He has my family. I didn’t have a choice.”
