LUNA

I wake up with a gasp, my hands wrapped around my stomach.

“It’s okay,” Yakov mumbles next to me. “I’m here. It’s just a dream.”

My stomach twists and I can’t catch my breath. “No. It’s not?—”

“It was just a dream.” He tries to press me gently back into bed.

“Yakov,” I gasp, twisting away from him. “I’m not dreaming.”

Instantly, he’s next to me, his large hand on my arm. “What is it?”

Another sharp pain radiates across my midsection. I hunch forward with a whimper.

Yakov doesn’t need to hear anything else. He grabs his phone off the nightstand. “You need to get to my house now,” he growls. “Bring your equipment. Something is wrong.”

He hangs up and comes next to me, pushing me back onto the bed as I try to stand up.

“Stay still,” he orders. “Dr. Jenkins is on his way.”

“I think walking might help.”

I have no idea why I think that, but it’s my instinct. Right now, delirious and in pain, instinct is all I have to go on.

Yakov grabs my elbow and helps me walk slowly back and forth across the room. With every lap, the tension in my core ebbs away. I can breathe again.

“Has this happened before?” he asks.

“I felt nauseous all day yesterday, but I didn’t think?—”

“You should have told me,” he snaps. “I would have called Dr. Jenkins sooner.”

“I didn’t think anything was wrong. It was just nausea. Whatever just happened now was different.” A sob catches in my throat. “Do you think something is wrong?”

He presses his hand to my lower back, steadying me. “It will all be fine.”

Half an hour later, Dr. Jenkins is next to my bed with a large black bag and a portable ultrasound machine. “It isn’t the most high-tech device, but it’ll do in a pinch,” he says with a nervous smile. “Just lie back and let me have a look.”

Yakov squeezes my hand as Dr. Jenkins presses the wand to my stomach.

Instantly, I see my babies. There are two heads visible on the screen with a tangle of arms and legs wiggling around.

They’re alive. I didn’t realize how scared I was that they weren’t until I see them moving.

“They’re okay?” I whimper.

“It appears so,” Dr. Jenkins says. “I don’t see anything wrong. Heartbeats are strong.”

“She woke up with cramping. That can’t be normal,” Yakov snarls.

Dr. Jenkins shrugs. “Actually, it can be. What have you been up to over the last twenty-four to forty-eight hours, Luna?”

I walk him backwards through my day. “I skipped dinner, went for a swim, ate a small lunch and breakfast. Last night, I…” I hesitate, glancing at Yakov. “Well, we…”

“We got engaged,” Yakov explains. “Last night, we celebrated. A few times.”
