Dr. Jenkins frowns at first, but I see the moment it clicks. “Intercourse.”

My face is burning hot. “Yes.”

“Well then, that could explain it,” he says. “There can be cramping after sex. Especially if it is… enthusiastic, shall we say. It also sounds like you may be a bit dehydrated. You need to make sure you’re eating and drinking more than normal, especially as your pregnancy continues.”

“That’s it?” I ask.

He smiles. “That’s it. Everything is fine.”

I smile up at Yakov. “I guess I made a big deal out of nothing. I’m sorry.”

But he isn’t smiling. He’s staring at the ultrasound, watching our babies kick and wiggle. Then he turns to Dr. Jenkins. “I want you to make a daily house call to check on her from this point on.”

Dr. Jenkins blinks. “Daily for the next five months?”

“Yakov,” I butt in, “that’s not necessary. I’m fine.”

“It wasn’t a suggestion,” he says, a dangerous edge to his voice.

Dr. Jenkins looks from me to Yakov. “I have to agree with Luna. That’s really not necessary. Her pregnancy is progressing normally. There’s no reason to worry about?—”

“There won’t be a single reason to worry once you’re examining her every day.”

The doctor sighs. “Mr. Kulikov, I understand that this can be a stressful experience for the parents, but I am not at all concerned about Luna or your babies.”

“Okay. So if something happens to Luna or my children, I will hold you personally responsible.” Yakov studies the man. “Are you concerned now?”

Dr. Jenkins goes pale as he nods. “I’ll—I’ll be back tomorrow after lunch.”

Yakov sees Dr. Jenkins out a few minutes later and then comes back with a glass of water for me. “Drink this.”

“I’m really okay. I don’t think Dr. Jenkins needs to come see me every day. What if we just did once per week?”

He presses the glass of water into my hand and doesn’t say a word until I’ve taken a drink.

“He is in the city to take care of you. That is what I’m paying him for. If I asked him to examine you once an hour, he’d have to do it.”

“That would really be overkill,” I tease.

Yakov lays his hand on my stomach. “I’m not taking any chances.”

I lay my hand over his, twining our fingers together. “I guess I can’t fault you for that.”

“No, you really can’t.”

I snort. “Between this overprotective bit and all the presents you’ve been leaving for me, I should probably stop arguing and start enjoying the pampering.”

He frowns. “You didn’t dig into your gifts while I was away, did you? I gave you explicit orders to wait until I was home.”

“Don’t worry, I didn’t touch the toys.” I reach into the collar of my shirt and pull out the rose necklace.

Yakov squints. “What is that?”

“My necklace. The one you left on the bed for me.”

He leans closer, his face going as pale as Dr. Jenkins’ just did.

“I texted you about it,” I continue.
