Page 32 of Corbin's Conflict

Corbin palms either side of my face and dips his head to press his forehead to mine. “Just remember that . . .” He pauses, sniffs, sniffs again, sucks in a breath and curses under his breath. “Baby, you need to relax for me, and don’t let that shit get to you. No one is going to take me, Sage, or our son from us.”

Our son.

That’s who had been lying lifeless alongside Corbin and Sage in the vision.

“It had to be conjured up,” I whisper. Because we don’t have a child. We’ve only been mated for a little over a week. There’s no way I could be . . .

“Syn, shifters can sense when a woman is pregnant from conception,” he explains, stroking my cheek gently. “I’ll explain more of this later, baby, but right now, we’ve got to get out there so I can see to business. Okay?”

“Okay,” I answer automatically, nodding. My mind whirling with what he’s just told me.

I’m pregnant, and the vision that I just had doesn’t sit well with me. Regardless, I move with Corbin the rest of the way down the hall and into the main room of the clubhouse. The scent of blood magic ambushes me, and I suck in a breath as I search the room for the culprit of the smell. Corbin’s brothers are standing in front of the reason behind the smell.

“What happened?” Corbin demands, releasing me in order to step in front of me to keep me from seeing whatever it is the smell is coming from. “The fuck is this shit?”

I peek around him just as the men separate, and on the floor is a dead wolf, body soaked in blood. Immediately words scream in my head, “Come to me, my Karsyn. Come to me, and I’ll spare this from happening to the rest. You do not, and that vision I sent you will be your reality.”

So it was Death who sent it to me. It wasn’t real. Or most of it wasn’t real. The part of me being pregnant was. My breathing becomes harsh and labored. My vision blurs once more, and my knees weaken because this is how he decides to mess with me. He’s going to kill wolves and maybe other animals until the blood moon. He’ll kill and kill and kill. He won’t stop. Not until he gets what he wants. That being me.

Before I can say or do anything, my body reacts for me, and in the blink of an eye, I’m no longer in the clubhouse, but back in Shadow Grove. In the dark forest the blood witches claim for themselves.

To protect the others . . . to protect Corbin and Sage . . . I’ll give myself over. At least until the time comes and Corbin comes for me.

This I know he’ll do. Already, I feel the connection between us. The rage inside him at my vanishing.

Tears spill down my cheeks as I whisper on the winds. “I love you, Corbin. I’m so sorry.”

Chapter Nineteen

Corbin

Fury, like no other, flows through my veins as I stare at the space my mate stood only moments ago. I heard the voice scream in her head. Felt the pain it gave her. I should have known she’d do this. Even carrying my child, she’d sacrifice herself because she will . . . fuck . . . she’ll protect the world if she could.

“What the hell just happened?” Justice demands.

They all saw what I saw. They didn’t, however, hear what I heard. It was enough to send a chill down my spine, and nothing had ever done that before.

“Doesn’t matter what happened. What does though is finding my woman,” I snarl, my wolf enraged by his mate being gone, by the reason for his mate leaving. By the fact his mate and unborn pup are now in more danger than ever. “How the hell did the dead wolf get here? Did someone see who brought it?”

“No new scents were detected,” Tucker remarks, stepping forward, eyes on the dead wolf.

“There wasn’t even a scent of magic anywhere other than on the dead wolf,” Justice announces, gaze meeting mine, the tick in his jaw visible. I know my VP well enough to know he’s beyond pissed and closing in on erupting. Stepping into my space, he murmurs, “Something’s off here, Corbin.”

I agree.

It’s not a secret that Karsyn had escaped the blood witches. No one would have known about the bond between my mate and me or how extensive it goes. The more I think, the more my wolf grows more frustrated over the fact we’re not going after Karsyn yet. It could be a trap we’d walk into. Karsyn went, and I know why she did, doesn’t mean I’m not pissed about it. She’d have known. Thought of the bond between us, not just the mating.

Fuck.

But now I’ve got to figure out who the fuck we’re dealing with here ‘cause I know for a fact if a blood witch were to come within feet of my clubhouse, one of my brothers would have sensed it. For that matter, Karsyn would have known before they even stepped foot into my territory. Someone had to have helped put that dead wolf at our door.

“Church, now,” I command, ignoring the smell of the already decomposing wolf. Making my way into the room, I don’t bother taking a seat. I simply wait for my brothers to file in and the door to close. “Someone brought that wolf here, and it wasn’t a blood witch. So, who the fuck was it?”

“Long shot, and maybe it’s nothing worth noting,” Tobias speaks up, crossing his arms over his chest.

“What is it?” Dane demands, fury rolling off him.

“A few of the doxies have been seen around town with Hummer.”Tobias’s words draw a snarl from my lips. “Twice I saw them. Could she have had something to do with any of this?”
