Auggie closed his hand over my lips. “No. You know I’m right about this. I know that your poverty anxiety is screaming at you right now, but it’s going to be okay. Have a little faith in yourself that things will work out.”

I pried his hand away. “How about if you have faith for me?”

Auggie laughed and drew me in for a hug. “I can absolutely do that.”

Luna was already at the clinic when I arrived.

The doctor I’d been meeting with approached us, a bright smile on her face, her tight black curls in a puff atop her head. “Luca, it’s so good to see you again. Thank you so much for coming in. And you must be Luna! I’m Dr. Carlton. I’m running the alpha portion of the Dynamic Spectrum Theory studies.”

“Nice to meet you,” Luna said, waving.

“Come with me and I’ll give you the rundown on everything.”

She led us to one of the consultation rooms, got us situated with coffee and cookies, and sat down across from us while we got comfortable on the loveseat.

“The reason I wanted to talk to both of you together is that Luna needs to be fully informed since her heat is where the synthetics will be tested. Our alpha synthetics are in clinical trials right now, and with some monitoring, we could get Luca on them, but he would have to stay on them for a while. Luna, have you shared heats with alphas in the past?”

“All of my heats,” Luna replied.

“Okay, that’s good. We’ll have your baseline to compare to. Essentially with the synthetics, Luca won’t be an alpha, but behaviors you might expect like an increased possessiveness, growling, insatiability, and so on are probably going to pop up.”

“What else do these synthetics do to him? Will he have a knot?”

My cheeks flushed at her question. I had asked them the same.

“No, unfortunately. The synthetics will make his body more resilient in general. It will increase his stamina, speed up healing, and reduce the refractory period, but they can’t change his physiology on a level like that.” Dr. Carlton looked thoughtful for a moment. “That we know of, anyway. We haven’t done long-term studies yet, but if they’re effective for assisting with heats, we’ll be looking into funding more research like that.”

“Okay, so basically right now it’s to make sure he’s not going to keel over as a beta taking on a heat?”

“That’s our hope, yes.” Dr. Carlton nodded. “We know the approximate schedule of your heat, so we’ll have Luca start on the medication about two months in advance to give it time to build up. There will be boosters for during the heat itself. We would require both of you to wear monitors during your heat. They’ll be keeping track of all your vitals, and if your levels on anything get too dangerous or your vitals crash, paramedics will be immediately alerted and dispatched.”

Dr. Carlton had stressed that to me on the phone. The alpha synthetics were made to help betas last through a heat, but it was a massive stress on the body.

“Do you have anyone you’re comfortable with who could check on you during the heat to make sure you’re staying in good physical condition?”

I would have to leave that up to Luna. It was her heat and I had no idea whom she would feel comfortable with.

She glanced over to me. “Would you be okay if we asked Auggie?”

“Sure. I have no issue with that.”

Luna turned to the doctor. “He’s an omega friend who lives in my building. It should be easy enough for him to check on us.”

Dr. Carlton looked like we had handed her a gift. “That’s wonderful! If he agrees, please make sure to have him call our clinic so we can get his information logged. We want to make this as comfortable as possible for everyone. The ideal would be for you to have your heat in a separate monitored facility, but we know that would skew the data having an omega outside their nest for a heat.

“In the meantime, I would suggest Luca do as much physical training as possible. Luna’s heat is close enough that we can start the alpha synthetics today after we get our baseline information—how far Luca can run, how much weight he can lift—and then we’ll be able to appropriately compare how well they’re working for you.”

“So, how does this all work?” Luna asked, her head doing the puppy tilt. “Can anyone take these?”

“Heavens, no. These are very specifically designed synthetics for betas on the alpha end of the spectrum. In all honesty, these specific synthetics have been in the works for years. It’s only with the development of the Dynamic Spectrum Theory and subsequent studies being conducted that we realized why the previous versions weren’t working well.”

Dr. Carlton showed us the monitors we would need to wear, got Luna’s permission to access her medical history from the omega clinic, and got all of the information she could about where the heat would take place and what supports we might need available. After that, she set me up with the synthetics after testing my current physical abilities.

Part of me was worried they wouldn’t work for me at all. They were still kind of a work in progress, but I didn’t want Luna to be in pain during her heat because I couldn’t handle things. Plus it had the added bonus of maybe helping other betas take care of their omega too. For so much of history, omega and beta pairings had been something of an anomaly, requiring at least one alpha being added to the small pack for the sake of the omega’s health and safety, but now that could all change.

“You look like you’ve got about a thousand thoughts all trying to get out at once,” Luna said, nudging me with her hip.

“I want to be able to take care of you so your heat to go well.”
