“You do take care of me,” she insisted.

“We’ve never tackled something like this before. I’m not designed to manage a heat by myself.”

“Luca, I don’t expect perfection. I know you’re not an alpha, but that doesn’t change that I want to do this with you. Who else is going to care this much about me? We’ll figure it out, okay?”

I huffed. “Okay. I’m nervous to take the first dose.”

“You probably won’t even notice,” she reminded me. “If it takes, like, two months to build up, the odds of you feeling anything after the first dose are pretty slim.”

“Don’t underestimate my anxiety’s ability to create psychosomatic symptoms.”

“Well, then, why don’t you take a dose, and I’ll do my very best to distract you so you don’t have any brain cells left to worry.”

Warmth rushed through my body. “I like that idea.”

Luna laughed. “Somehow I’m not surprised.”

“I guess we should talk to Auggie and see if he’s down to be our monitor? If he says no, we’ll at least have time to find somebody else.”

“Sure thing. Why don’t we pick up a pizza so we have something to bribe him with?”

We did just that, showing up at his door with offerings of ham and pineapple, and meat lovers.

“I knew you moving into this building was going to be good for our friendship.” Auggie laughed, taking the pizza boxes into the kitchen.

“We have something very important to ask you,” Luna said, tucking up against his side.

“Is this a sexy proposition or am I going to have to do work?”

“The latter, but I promise we’ll be super grateful.”

Auggie sighed dramatically. “What is it?”

“We’re going to be part of a study during my heat. We need someone to check on us and make sure we haven’t died.”

“Oh, that’s way less work than I was expecting. Sure, whatever you need, babe.”

“Really?” I asked.

Luna already trusted him. I just had to get comfy with the fact that he was going to see me naked.

“Absolutely. I’m a saint.”

“You were named after one,” Luna pointed out. “It’s about time you lived up to that name.”

Auggie scoffed playfully. “Excuse you, I live the saint life every day.”

We gave him a rundown of the study while we ate. Auggie was endlessly fascinated by the prospect, insisting that if it worked it would quadruple his dating pool.

“Don’t you worry. I’m gonna make sure that you two are eating and that you are regularly squeaky clean. Just don’t bite me for coming into your nest space.”

Luna shrugged. “I can’t promise that.”

“Remind me closer to and I’ll give you something of mine to put in there so your feral little hindbrain registers me as someone safe when I come in.”

I took my first dose while we ate. Auggie watched me for a few moments like he expected me to hulk out, but when that didn’t happen, he focused back on his dinner. The pizza and laughter were plenty distracting, but not quite as good as when Luna took me upstairs to her suite, set me on her couch, and climbed into my lap.

“I can’t believe you’re doing all of this for me.” She captured my mouth before I could answer, grinding down on my lap until I could barely breathe.
