I would do anything for her, but saying so out loud would probably freak her out. She had been opening up to me bit by bit, including me more, asking for more and more of my time, and I was terrified that if I pointed it out, the bubble around us would burst and she would realize how much she had let me in.

“I can’t believe you want me for your heat,” I said instead. “I don’t feel like enough.”

Luna gripped my face in both hands, squeezing just shy of painfully. “Luca, you’re more than I’ve ever dreamed every fucking day. If we struggle a little bit with something that happens once or twice a year, I’m okay with that. Heats are important, sure, but you make me feel safe and cared for and that’s always going to count more than anything else. You’re enough for me.”

I swallowed hard. There was talk of the future tucked in there, but to keep the bubble intact I opted to kiss her again instead, tucking my hands beneath the hem of her shirt and spreading them across the expanse of skin.

She arched into me, lifting her arms above her head for me to peel off her shirt. Our mouths reconnected once the fabric was tossed aside and I dove into the sweetness of her lips once more.

I stripped her down one piece at a time, and, with her permission, I carried her up to her nest, laying her back into it. Another rule firmly shattered. This wasn’t a temporary setup; this was her sacred space, and she wanted me in it.

I shucked my own clothing as quickly as I could and climbed in. Her purr rumbled in my ear as she pulled me down until all of my weight was on her.

“I thought you don’t like the squish?”

“I don’t like it when someone won’t get off when I say. Big difference. Move.” I lifted my weight off her and she beamed up at me. “See? No problem. Now I need you to fuck me in this nest. We’re going to need plenty of practice.”

I didn’t know if I actually could be what she needed. But I was damn sure going to try.

Luca:

Pray for me

Sunshine:

Luca:

I’m about to talk to Mom about moving out

Sunshine:

Good luck

Keep me posted

Itook a deep breath, trying to steel myself for the conversation. I was making dinner tonight and I was just putting the finishing touches on some spaghetti carbonara when my parents sat down. I served them and poured wine into their glasses. I wasn’t drinking myself, but I hoped it might help Mom take the news in stride.

“This is so lovely, Lulu. What’s the occasion?”

She looked so happy that I could barely bring myself to speak, but I had to. “I wanted to talk to the two of you.”

Dad paused, his fork halfway to his mouth. “Well, hurry up about it. No need to sound ominous.”

“I’m sure this is something you’ve been expecting, but…I found a place I’d like to move out to.”

Mom’s whole face turned red, tears springing instantly to her eyes. Guilt stacked inside me, brick after brick, at her stricken expression.

“You’re going to leave me?”

“Maria.” Dad took her hand in his. “Luca is twenty-six. It’s time.”

“But I wanted him to stay until he got married.” She pushed the carbonara away with a heart-breaking sob. Her bottom lip wobbled dangerously as she tried to suck back her tears.

“And how would he ever do that when he lives here?” Dad asked. “Things have changed. People want to see some independence in their partners.”

Mom wrenched her hand out of Dad’s. “There are more important things than independence. He’s my last baby!”
