“Rodney just told me he’s moving to Juneau, Alaska.”
A smile burst over my face. Good old Walter.
“It’s barely far enough. Did he say anything else?”
“Just that. I guess he got a job offer that was too good to refuse.”
“What’s he going to do about the divorce and custody if he’s moving away?”
“I don’t know. He definitely can’t have the girls every second weekend if he’s living that far away.”
Goddamnit, Walter. Those were supposed to be wrapped up too.
“Well, he’s gonna have to figure it out. He can’t bounce across the country otherwise.”
Stella was quiet for a moment. “Did you have something to do with this? You said you had a plan to make him go away.”
“I did.”
She was quiet a beat more before a laugh bubbled out of her. “Oh my god. How the hell did you manage to convince him to move to Alaska?”
“I had some connections I could exploit. I’ll follow up with them and make sure everything else gets resolved.”
“I was kind of pissed at first when he told me,” Stella said, “but the more I thought about it, the more relieved I got. I haven’t told the girls yet.”
“Probably better to wait on that until everything is cemented.”
“What else are you getting him to do?”
“Give you the house and sole custody of the girls.”
“Oh my god, Luna.” Stella’s voice got all breathy like she was about to cry.
“If it wouldn’t free him of giving you child support, I might’ve thought about asking him to sign away his parental rights, but I planned this so you would get fucked over as little as possible in extracting him from our lives.”
“I had no idea I was related to an evil genius.” A tiny sob snuck out of her. “I bet Rodney has no idea what’s going to hit him.”
“So you’re not mad?”
“No. It’s better than anything I could’ve done to protect the girls. A bit more heads-up would’ve been nice, but I can work with this.”
“I didn’t want to get your hopes up in case my connection fell through. It was kind of a long shot.”
While I was on the call with her, I switched her over to speaker and messaged Arthur.

“Stella, that’s Luca. We’re heading to Allie’s birthday party, but I’ll talk to you later once I know more, okay?”
