“Yeah, of course. Go have fun.”

Luca:

I’m here

I unlocked the front door for him, gathered up my things for the party, and met him in the hallway. Luca leaned down for a kiss and took everything off my hands before the two of us headed down to his vehicle.

“You look like you have gossip,” Luca commented as we walked.

“I do! Rodney’s moving to Alaska! I can’t fucking wait.”

“Jesus, I knew you had a plan in the works, but I wasn’t expecting that. That’s a long way to go.”

“If I could send him to the moon, I would.”

“Why did he agree to go?”

“Greed. I got the client that let him into the club to arrange everything. Made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.”

Luca laughed. “Going full Godfather on Rodney?”

“He deserves it.”

“So he’s getting a huge pay bump to go?”

I nodded.

“And more money for him is better?”

“He’s signing the contract before the divorce, so Stella will get half of the signing bonus and she’ll get more child support with his higher income. It won’t really be more than he was making before. I know he’s not going to hunt or garden to reduce his costs of food while living up there, so he’ll have less money than before, actually. I hope he gets frostbite on his junk.”

Luca loaded my things into the car and we headed over to pick up Meg so we wouldn’t be too suspicious arriving together. I hadn’t seen her or talked to her much for months, but she’d been deep in her PhD program and gone MIA on a lot of us. Not that I blamed her. The few people I knew who had gone through a PhD said it was pretty all-consuming.

Meg met us at the door to her townhouse and slipped into the back seat when we arrived. She leaned between the seats and kissed my cheek. “Thanks for convincing me to come out tonight. If I have to read one more page, my eyeballs are gonna fall out.”

“If I couldn’t convince you to come out for Allie’s birthday, there’s no hope for you,” I replied with a laugh.

“I know. I need to surface more often. Nice to see you again, Luca.”

“You too.” Luca smiled back at her.

“You’ll have to surface again next month for Nicky’s birthday,” I reminded Meg. “And then Sidney and Allie’s anniversary in August.”

Meg let out a puff of air. “Can’t believe it’s been that long already. Feels like yesterday she was walking down the aisle.”

“I know, right? What did you get the birthday girl?” I asked.

“Membership that covers all the city attractions for the year and a gift card to that fancy historic restaurant she’s been wanting to try. You?”

“Spa day at that cute place by their house.”

“Luca, what did you get her?” Meg asked.

“Nothing so fancy as you two. There’s a flower arrangement in the trunk, and I got a list of all of her favorite treats, spent the last week baking everything. She’s got probably about twenty pounds of baked goods to take home.”

“Oh, that’s right. I forgot she told me you were working at a bakery now.”

“With one of Nicky’s babes,” I added.
