Mom looked like she was ready to cry at the title.

“I’m sorry. I had to stage a kitten rescue. Otherwise, I would’ve been here on time.”

Allie was cuddling the little orange baby while Luna put her flowers into water and set them in the middle of the table.

“Auntie, can we hold the kitty?” Nova asked.

“Just be gentle,” Luna called out, and Allie wandered over to transfer the kitten into Nova’s arms.

I watched Rory like a hawk to make sure she was petting carefully.

“Does it have a name?” Nova asked.

“I just found it outside, so not yet,” I replied.

“Auntie, can I name the baby?”

“We don’t know if she’s going to keep it,” Stella said.

“But she has to,” Allie said, perking up. “The universe gifted her a little trash baby. It’s the cat distribution system at work.”

“I know absolutely nothing about having a cat, but I guess I could learn.” Luna crouched down in front of me, giving the kitten a forehead kiss. “What do you want to name it, Supernova?”

“Creamsicle!” she declared.

“That sounds perfect to me. And while I’m down here—” Luna rustled in the pocket of her dress, looking up at me as everyone else turned to her. She handed me two slim silver bands.

All the breath left my body as I stared at them. Everyone watched us with bated breath.

“Firstly, this is not a marriage proposal. I think everyone here knows how stubborn I can be and that I’ve never been the best at making commitments. I’m trying to change all of that. You were right when you said I’m not the same Luna who started things with you, and I’m so grateful you had the patience to put up with the incredibly steep learning curve I was working with when it came to being with someone.”

Stella slipped around next to me and pulled Rory onto her lap so I could have this moment focusing on Luna.

My bright and beautiful omega took my hands, toying with the rings with her thumb. “It feels very weird to say any of this in front of people, but I should get used to that too. We’re coming up on a year, and I couldn’t help but think about how many more of those years I want to share with you. I’m not ready to start planning a wedding, but I think I’m ready to promise that I will be one day. If you’ll have me, that is.”

I felt the weight of every eye on me, but all I could see was Luna. She was the embodiment of everything I’d ever dreamed of and everything I wanted. I couldn’t quite believe she was on her knees, asking me to be with her. I took her face in my hands and kissed her with every ounce of love I could pour into the motion.

Cheers erupted around us. She pulled away slowly, eyes misty, smile on her lips. “I take it that’s a yes to the promise ring?”

“It’s a yes to everything you ever want to give me. I’ll take every promise and keep you forever.”

She kissed me again before holding out her left hand for me to slip one of the rings onto her finger before putting one on me in return. The rings matched the necklace my mother had purchased for her.

“This is the best anniversary present I could’ve ever asked for. Way better than the tiara I bought for you.”

Luna laughed and climbed onto my lap to hug me.

“I still dibs being a bridesmaid,” Nova announced.

“Obviously,” Luna said with a laugh. “Just don’t get too ahead of us on that.”

The oven timer went off, and Sidney slipped into the kitchen to pull out a hefty baked ham to feed everyone. Mom bustled over to assist, removing bakeware of mashed potatoes, corn, and carrots and setting them on the stove.

“Everyone come dish up,” Mom ordered, her eyes shiny as she swept over to pull Luna and me into a hug. “I love you both so much.”

A lineup formed behind Mom, everyone trying to get in their own congratulatory hugs, and Nicky’s pack cheering from the screen, sending their well wishes.

It felt like I was walking on clouds. I might have quietly hoped for Luna dedicating herself to me when it was just the two of us, but I had never dreamed she would do it so publicly. Not that long ago it would’ve terrified her and rendered her completely incapable of doing it, but now she was pulling that expectation onto herself. Maybe it was even a strength for her, knowing how many people supported us.
