I set the flowers down and scooped the kitty up. It continued to scream while I checked it over. It didn’t look injured, but I could feel its little ribs. I couldn’t leave it out here.

I pulled out my phone and messaged Luna.

Luca:

I got a bit sidetracked with something

I’ll be there as soon as I can

Sunshine:

No rush

I’ll be here when you’re ready

I looked up pet supply stores on my way back to the car and zipped over to the nearest one. One of the workers stocked me up on kitten supplies. They also assisted me in giving the kitty a quick wash at the dog wash station so that Little Orange was considerably less gross. We rinsed away enough dirt we could’ve constructed another kitten from it.

There were screaming protests during the blow-dryer, but soon enough the kitten was a healthy poof and ready to go with me.

I wasn’t entirely sure what Luna would make of the kitten, but I knew she also wouldn’t want to leave it outside.

Luca:

On my way with a surprise

Sunshine:

Better not overshadow my surprise :P

She buzzed me into the building when I arrived, and I made my way up to her apartment with the kitten, cat supplies, and flowers tucked into my arms.

Luna stood frozen, eyes wide with shock when she opened the apartment door. “Is that a cat?”

“Yeah! I found it in the trash.”

“Oh my goodness. Come here, baby.” She scooped up the kitten and cradled it to her chest. She was wearing a navy polka-dot dress, her hair in a high ponytail with a matching bow, her lips painted bright red.

Movement behind her caught my eye, and it was only then I noticed her apartment was full of people. I counted the faces: Sidney, Allie, Stella and her daughters, Auggie, and my parents. A laptop was open with Nicky and a handful of her pack squished onto the screen.

“What’s going on?”

“It’s my first dinner party. Nicky’s having some trouble with pregnancy nausea so she and the pack stayed home, but we get them here in electronic spirit.”

“Why was I not allowed to bring anything if it’s a dinner party?”

“Because you’re the guest of honor. Your mom and Sidney helped me make everything.”

I surveyed the space. Luna’s dining table was decorated immaculately, and everyone looked totally comfortable in her living room, drinks half-empty like they had been there for a while already.

I kissed her softly, the kitten screaming between us. “I’m so proud of you for opening up your space to this many people.”

“Thanks.” Her cheeks flushed pink. “It took some wrangling.”

Everyone slowly gathered around us and Sidney took the bag of kitten supplies I had purchased, setting up a little corner of Luna’s apartment for the kitty to chill and eat some much-needed dinner.

I mingled around with everyone, Rory climbing onto my lap and Nova wedging herself next to me, forcing Auggie to move over.

“Uncle Luca, it took you so long to get here. I’m so hungry.”
