“That’s almost half an hour to sleep until he gets here,” said Auggie. “I’ll pop back to check on you after my set.”
He got me settled back into my capsule nest, telling one of the stage hands to let Arthur know I was off for the night.
My boss came down while I was dozing and rapped his knuckles against the nest door.
I peered up at him.
“You’re off the rest of the weekend. I’ll have someone fill in.”
Ordinarily I’d have fought it, but I was too tired to do so. “Okay.”
“Cashed out your tips for you.” Arthur handed me an envelope. “Need me to call a service to get you home?”
“I have someone coming to pick me up.”
“Would that someone be a beta who doesn’t have membership to the club who’s been standing outside for the past five minutes?”
I sat up sharply, smacking my head on the roof of the nest. “Shit.”
“Hey, hey, calm down. I’ll go let him in. What’s his name?”
“Luca.”
“All right. Sit tight.”
I absolutely didn’t sit tight. My phone had three missed calls and a handful of messages on it, and I was naked in my nest.
Luca:
I’m at the address but I don’t know if it’s the right place?
Is there a number wrong maybe?
Luna?
Are you okay?
Luna:
I’M SO SORRY
GIVE ME TWO MINUTES
I scrambled to the lockers, dragged out the clothing I’d arrived in, and yanked on my yoga pants and T-shirt without bothering with underwear. I should’ve showered off the glitter, but it was too late now.
Luca walked in, flanked by two security guards, looking as startled as I had ever seen him. “Um…”
“Questions later?” I didn’t like the note of begging in my tone.
“Sure…”
I wasn’t sure where Auggie was. Maybe he’d come by when I was sleeping, but I didn’t want Luca in here for longer than necessary. I grabbed my purse and ballet flats out of my locker and latched onto Luca’s arm, letting him and the security lead me back the way he’d come. Luca’s head was swiveling so hard he was going to get whiplash. One of the girls walked by totally naked and Luca’s gaze whipped up to the ceiling. I bit my lip to hide my smile.
Security watched while Luca bundled me into the passenger seat and climbed in on the other side. I waved to security and Luca set off.
“So,” I said, lapsing into silence.
