“Uh, yeah. What exactly was that place?”

“It’s a very exclusive club where rich alphas pay for access to omega performers.” No sense in mincing words.

“What kind of access?”

I could see the wheels turning in his head, but his tone was so neutral I couldn’t tell what direction those thoughts were going to take.

“Depends on the omega,” I answered honestly. A pounding headache was starting to throb at the base of my skull.

“God, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t even be worrying about any of that right now. Are you okay?”

I blinked at him, totally taken off guard at the switch in topics. “I don’t feel very well.”

“Do you want to pop by one of the twenty-four-hour clinics?”

I stewed on the question. It probably wasn’t a bad idea. “If you don’t mind.”

“On it.” At the next red light, Luca did a search for the nearest ones and his phone bleated out the directions until we were parked in front of the glowing sign. “Are you okay to walk?”

“If you let me hold onto you.”

He came around to my side of the car and helped me out, getting me settled on the chair in the waiting room while one of the nurses came by to scan my ID.

“Come right in.” The nurse led me to another room and took my vitals. “You’re running a bit of a fever, but you’re not too close to a heat according to the hormone test.”

She took me to another room, where the doctor looked me over and declared I was fighting off an infection before writing me a prescription. Luca waited quietly with me while I had it filled at the pharmacy next door before hopping back in the car and heading to my apartment.

I clung to Luca the whole way up.

“What do you want me to do?” he asked as we stood in my entryway.

What did I want him to do? I’d sent him away last time. I didn’t want to be alone tonight, but I also wasn’t at a nest-sharing stage. I settled on something safe. “Could you help me shower?”

Luca nodded and got the water running, being as gentle with me as he had the last time we’d washed up together. Once I was clean, he filled the tub and got me soaking while he fetched me some juice so I could take my medicine.

I knew we needed to talk, but Luca seemed in no hurry. Once I’d taken my medicine, Luca took his time French-braiding my hair again. The silence was unnerving.

“Do you want me to answer questions?”

“Only if you’re feeling up to it.”

“Might as well get it out of the way.” I braced myself for whatever he might say, and he must’ve seen because he laid a soft kiss on my shoulder.

“How long have you worked there?”

“Since I turned eighteen.”

If he was surprised by that, he didn’t show it.

“What made you start?”

“Money. I needed to pay rent and tuition without taking up all of my study time.”

“Do you like it?” His fingers dug into the knots in my shoulders, fighting the tension in my body.

“Most of the time.” It felt easier to not be able to see his face. “Some aspects of it are easier than others.”

“What do…?” He fell silent for a moment before continuing. “What all do you do there?”
