The creek of the old hinges sounds as the heavy gate opens, depositing Lucian, Leo, and … shit—Cole onto my floor. I meet Cole’s eyes and blink twice at the warmth radiating from his gaze.
A slow smile divides his face as he asks, “Where do you want me?”
I blink, confused, and reply, “Huh?”
Lucian chuckles behind Cole and says, “He asked, where do you want these? They’re kind of heavy.”
My gaze drifts to their hands, and I finally notice the boxes in their arms. “Oh, right. Anywhere you can find room, along a wall would be great. Thanks.”
I peer inside the lift, where a stack of boxes still sits, lining one side. I bend to pick up one of the boxes when hands on my hips pull me back into a tight body.
Lips trace the shell of my ear, and I shiver in their hold. “We got those, angel. Why don’t you help Nyx figure out where to put things so they’ll be out of the way of the construction, and we don’t have to move all this stuff a third time.” Teeth scrape down my neck, and my head falls to the side, giving him better access. He takes the wordless invitation and closes his mouth around the juncture of my neck and shoulder, biting down and sucking deeply.
A moan escapes me when the euphoria of being on just the right side of pain washes through me and an uncomfortable cough echoes from behind us.
“Shit,” I whisper, spinning around in Dante’s arms and slapping him on the bicep. “That wasn’t fair. You all play dirty.”
I meet Leo’s amused gaze and can feel the heat rising in my cheeks. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize. I gotta admit, though …”
“It was hot, right?” Dante chimes in, cutting him off.
“Fuck yes.” Leo approaches me and whispers low, “My brother is an idiot to ever let you get away.”
I stare into Leo’s eyes, unsure how to read this guy. When we first met, he seemed annoyed with me, as though from the beginning he thought I was bad news. Now, here he stands, willing to help me and my best friend with construction on our new apartment and help us move her in. Now, he’s telling me his brother never should have let me go.
“Thank you,” I whisper back, figuring it’s the safest option at the moment.
He smiles and walks past me to pick up another box, carrying it into the apartment.
“You okay there, angel?” Dante asks, studying my expression.
“I’m not sure. That was strange, right? After our first meeting, I could have sworn he hated me.” I point in the direction Leo just walked.
Dante wraps an arm around my shoulders and stares after Leo. “He never hated you, Devy. He was just picking up on his big brother’s stress and emotions. Cole has always been the brains of that duo and Leo was the muscle. He’s always felt the physical need to protect Cole. And right now, there’s a lot going with Cole that Leo can’t do anything about because there’s no one for him to punch.”
