I glanced at her, my hesitation written all over my face. This was dangerous territory and letting her do so would be thrusting her right into the middle of it. The risks to her safety were real. Truthfully, the stakes had never been higher.

Yet, as I deliberated, I couldn’t ignore the confidence in her voice, the resolute way she stood her ground. She had already proven herself adept at navigating my world, showing both a shrewd judgement and tact in situations I’d never expected she could handle. How could I deny her this? Her strengths, her insights, they weren’t just supporting my operations anymore; they had become integral.

I need her.

It was a gamble, but one that might pay off. Trusting her was not just about believing in her abilities; it was about respecting her as my equal.

In that moment, I realized that my role wasn’t to shield her from danger, but to support her as she faced it. Maci was no mere spectator in my world; she was a player in her own right.

With a deep breath, I finally made my decision.

“You’re right, I did. What do you have in mind?” I asked, locking her gaze with mine.

Maci’s eyes held a determined glint, and it made my cock rock hard. I wanted to fuck her right then and there, but instead, I lifted my chin and waited for what she said next.

“I want you to set up a meeting. Just me and the Secretary-General. I need to confront him, face-to-face.”

The idea was bold, even risky, but Maci had proven herself more than capable. If anyone could navigate this treacherous situation, it was her. As wary as I was of her taking the lead, I needed to let her. I needed to trust her.

I needed to let her be my queen.

“Alright, I’ll arrange it. But be careful, princess. We don’t know what he’s capable of.”

She nodded, a fierce look of determination on her face. “I know. But it’s a risk we need to take. I have a plan.”

“Tell me everything,” I replied.

The smile that lit up her face made it all worth it.

CHAPTER 26

Two weeks later

Maci

I took a deep breath, trying to prepare myself for the night. Not only was I going to be the face of the Kaligaris family all on my own, but I was going to go against the Secretary-General head-to-head.

He was going to listen to everything I had to say. I was going to make him.

It was time to put my plan into motion.

In just under an hour, I was to attend a charity gala event for “The Smile of the Child,” a renowned Greek organization dedicated to supporting orphans and vulnerable children. Every elite member of Greek society was going to be there, including the Secretary-General. We’d made certain of it.

All it had taken were a few bribes in the right places to secure the guest list and ensure he was coming.

Nikolaos, who had made arrangements to appear out of town, had in fact discreetly stayed to oversee the evening’s developments. He had made a substantial donation to the charity in my name, a gesture that would significantly bolster our standing among the elite.

We’d let our engagement leak to the media. Immediately, our phones were ringing with requests for interviews, but Nikolaos and I had made certain that neither of us had been seen in public, not until tonight at the charity ball anyway.

My presence alone would draw attention. We were counting on it.

My strategy was clear: utilize charm and tact to subtly win over the crowd. Every interaction needed to be a calculated step, leaving behind a trail of favorable impressions in my wake. Tonight, I would play my part to perfection, helping to garner support and turn opinions in our favor.

In addition, it was my job to get the Secretary-General all alone so the two of us could have a frank conversation about what the future was going to hold for him and my future husband.

I took a deep breath. I knew I could do this.

With a bit of self-assurance, I stood in front of the mirror and looked at my reflection. I’d chosen a beautiful sage green dress with a matching clutch that complemented my complexion and the color of my eyes. The dress was both elegant and commanding, perfect for the role I was about to play. I’d styled my hair in loose, sophisticated waves, framing my face quite elegantly, or so I thought. My makeup was impeccable, a balance of bold and classic, enhancing my features perfectly. I exuded confidence from every pore.
