Fuck. This is bad.

His other hand tightened around my arm, and he started to drag me away from the light of the red carpet and into the shadows.

As we moved further into the darkness, I prepared myself for the struggle I knew was coming. Alexander Pappas might have caught me off guard, but I was not the same person he had kidnapped before.

This time, I was ready to fight.

I snarled, twisting my body hard and almost breaking his grasp.

Then footsteps approached, and two other figures materialized from the darkness, their forms cloaked in the night, and I stilled. The two men were huge. He must have brought them along as his muscle, and I snarled again, unwilling to go down without a struggle.

I was outnumbered now. I might have had a chance fighting against Alexander on his own, but now that it was three to one, my chances were growing slimmer by the second.

“Need a hand, Alex?” one of them jeered, a smirk evident in his tone. His voice grated on my nerves. He leered at me as he grew closer, his gaze settling on my breasts as they heaved up and down from the exertion of fighting Alexander off.

I wanted to rip his eyes straight out of his skull.

“Just keep a lookout,” Alexander growled in response, his attention still firmly on me.

“Where are you taking me, Alexander?” I asked, my voice trembling slightly but loud enough for all of them to hear.

“To a place where we can talk without interruptions,” he replied, his voice cold and devoid of emotion.

I hated him.

The second man chuckled. “Yeah, a nice, quiet chat. That’s all.”

I didn’t like the insinuation in his tone.

“I just want to understand why you’re doing this,” I said, stalling for time as my fingers fumbled with the clasp of my clutch bag.

Their malignant laughter filled the air, a sound that made my skin crawl, but it provided the perfect cover for me. With a quick movement, I opened my clutch and wrapped my fingers around the small gun that Nikolaos had insisted I take to protect myself tonight. I had thought it was a bit over the top, but I couldn’t be more thankful for it now.

Before they could react, I pulled the gun out and pressed it directly to Alexander’ skull. The laughter died abruptly, replaced by a tense silence.

“Let go of me, Alexander,” I said firmly, the gun unwavering in my hand. “I’m not going anywhere with you.”

For a moment, the two of us were at a standoff, the night air thick with tension. Then, slowly, he released his grip on me, raising his hands in a gesture of surrender. The two men stepped back, their eyes fixed on the gun in my hand.

“Seems like our little bird has talons,” the first man said, a note of respect in his voice.

“Maybe we need to clip her wings,” the other one snarled.

“Don’t take one step farther. I’m not afraid to use this,” I threatened.

They didn’t listen.

Like they were invincible, the two men lunged at me simultaneously, their movements too swift and far too desperate. As they moved closer, I recognized them as the two men that had kept me captive. They had underestimated me once; I wasn’t going to let them do it again.

Reacting instinctively, I squeezed the trigger.

The sound of the gunshots shattered the night, two sharp reports that echoed off the surrounding buildings.

In an instant, their whole world changed.

The first man staggered back, a look of shock and pain crossing his face as he fell to the ground, clutching at the blood pouring from the gunshot to his throat. The second, hit square between the eyes, stood there looking forlorn for a long moment before he collapsed with a loud thud.

For a few seconds, everything stood still.
