Alexander sprang into action. He was on me in an instant, his hand seizing my wrist with a vice-like grip. He twisted hard, and the pain was immediate and intense, shooting all the way up my arm and making me cry out. I couldn’t hold onto the gun, and it clattered to the ground, slipping out of my reach.

Fuck.

“You shouldn’t have done that, Maci,” Alexander hissed, his face inches from mine, his grip unrelenting. “Now I’m going to have to make you pay for that.”

Pain coursed through my wrist, but I refused to show him any semblance of fear. “You shouldn’t have underestimated me,” I retorted, meeting his gaze with open rebelliousness.

I would stand my ground, no matter what.

Alexander’s grip on my wrist was unyielding as he dragged me into a nearby alley, away from the street and any potential witnesses. The darkness of the alley felt suffocating, the cold night air closing in around me. Unmercifully, he pushed me against the cold, rough wall of the venue, his body an immovable barrier between me and any hope of escape.

“You’re going to regret killing my men,” he snarled, his face inches from mine, his breath hot against my skin.

I tried to push back against his chest, but his strength was overwhelming. “Let me go and I won’t tell anyone about this,” I spat back, trying to mask my fear with defiance.

Alexander’s eyes narrowed, a cruel smile playing on his lips. “Oh, Maci, you still don’t understand, do you? This isn’t just about you. This is about the men that your fiancé killed, my men. The guns we planted didn’t really have our intended effect, but what happens next is going to be a message, special just for him.”

“And what message is that?” I demanded, struggling to keep my voice steady.

“That no one defies the Pappas family. That anyone who tries will be dealt with… harshly. That nothing he owns is safe from us, even you,” he replied, his grip tightening.

I could feel the cold wall pressing against my back, the hard reality of the situation setting in. Fear twisted in my stomach, but I refused to let it consume me. I needed to keep a level head, and that was exactly what I was going to do.

“So, what now? You’re going to kill me?” I challenged, trying to find a crack in his resolve.

Alexander leaned in closer, his voice a menacing whisper. “Killing you would be too easy, Maci. No, I have something else in mind for you.”

His words sent a chill down my spine, but I refused to cower. “You won’t get away with this, Alexander. Nikolaos knows that I’m here. He’ll come looking for me.”

He chuckled darkly. “By the time he starts looking, it will be too late.”

He suddenly spun me around, pushing me against the wall with a force that knocked the breath from my lungs. His hand pressed against my back, pinning my breasts firmly against the cold, unyielding surface. The rough texture of the brick wall scraped against my skin through the fabric of my dress.

Fuck.

He planted his other hand next to my head, effectively caging me in. I could feel his breath on the back of my neck, and I had to force myself to swallow back the bile in the back of my throat.

I tried to push back against him, to find some leverage, but it was futile. His strength was overwhelming, and in that moment, I felt the full weight of my vulnerability.

I’m not going to fight my way out of this.

His hand reached down, fumbling with the fabric of my dress as he dragged it up, revealing the backs of my calves, then my knees, and then my thighs, all the way up until the chill air of the night caressed my bare ass. His hand gripped my right bottom cheek, and I shrieked.

He’s going to rape me.

The sound of another man clearing his throat in the alley broke through the quiet, and I turned my head. In an instant, a wave of relief crashed over me.

He came for me.

“Nikolaos,” I breathed.

In an instant, I knew I was safe.

“No one lays a hand on my wife and gets away with it,” Nikolaos stated, his voice low and dangerous. He stepped forward, an unspoken threat in his every move. “Now I have no choice but to kill you.”

Alexander’s face fell, and he turned his head, momentarily caught off guard.

It was as if the entire world had gone still in that single moment.
