“This is right. Flowers from the field in front of our cabin. A ceremony with everyone we love, in a dress you picked out. I want this.” She stares up at me. “You and me, in this field, making a memory in front of that river we can look out on for the rest of eternity. It’s all I want.”

I lift her into my arms and lean into her lips, kissing her sweetly. I plan to keep it that way until my tongue slides past her lips and brushes hers. Then, all bets are off.

At least I think they are.

“Oh no, mister.” She wiggles down out of my arms. “You have to wait until after the ceremony.”

“I’ve had you dozens of times. I can’t wait. I’ll go crazy.” I pull her against me. “You’re so damn perfect, little one. Everything about you.”

She runs her fingertip over the scar on my arm. The duct tape did the job, though I’m sure stitches would’ve made it a hell of a lot prettier. “You’re perfect. And if you were to lift me up and bend me over the back of your truck, I’d probably let you.” Her tone is playful and melodic.

“Ah, so you have requests.”

Her nose scrunches. “Kind of. I’ve been thinking about it since last night when you turned the headlights on, and we danced for a while in the dust.”

“I fucked you last night too. Against that pine tree out back.”

“I know, and I liked it. Now… I want you to bend me over the back of the truck bed.”

“You won’t make it. You’re too short.”

She stares up at me and grins. “I’ll stand on your toolbox.”

The deacon interrupts us from behind. “You two ready to get started?”

I drag in a deep breath and laugh as I look toward Aspen. Her cheeks are red. I’m sure she’s wondering how much he’s heard.

“This one still wants to change.” I plant a kiss on top of her head before she runs off through the grass, back toward the little cabin we bought together a few weeks ago. It’s a humble place with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a view of the river. It sits on twelve acres a few miles from town.

It’s a little like us. It sat far too long, waiting for someone to come along and fix it. But now that the right person has, it’s warm, inviting, and always filled with banana bread.
