Millie’s tone dropped, and her eyes were piercing. “And what would that be?”

“You remember that last day of the gallery sale? The one where you didn’t want to go in, so you sent me?”

“Uh-huh . . .”

“Remember how I pretended I was you for the day?”

“Yes . . .”

Just get it over with, Lira. “Well, the guy was really cute, and I felt a connection with him. He asked for my number, and I gave it to him, but since he was a client, I thought I gave him your number, like I always do with a client.”

“But . . .?”

“But apparently, I was so smitten that I gave him my number after all.” Now for the hard part.

“Lira, what did you just do?” Millie was standing by this point, and I backed up into the living room.

“I had to pretend I was you on the phone just now.”

“Lira!”

“He called thinking it was you. What was I supposed to do?”

“Tell him he got the wrong sister!”

“I panicked.” I went over and grabbed her arms. “I really like him, Millie. Please, can I pretend to be you just to get to know him a little more? I might not like him after getting to know him, and then telling him who I am will all be for nothing. After that, we can go our separate ways, and he’ll never know it wasn’t me.”

“And what if it goes the other way?”

“I’ll come clean. I promise.”

“Well, you’re definitely not marrying him as me if it gets that far.”

Millie was probably thinking the boy didn’t have a chance, because I usually got tired of them pretty quickly. But Bruno wasn’t a boy. He was a man through and through.

. . . And he’d elicited a puff of smoke from my palm. Something had awakened in me, and I was going to find out what it was.

After a few seconds, Millie said, “Fine. But I don’t want to be involved in any way, do you understand? If he finds out somehow and gets mad at you, don’t drag me into your problem, got it?”

I squealed and hugged her tight. “I won’t drag you into it. I promise. You’re the best sister ever!”

Bruno

Millie was ready when I arrived. She was in a form-fitting pair of dark blue jeans with a white loose sweater that only gave a hint of her body beneath. I couldn’t take my eyes off her.

“Hi,” was all she said when she opened the door, and my eyes immediately navigated to her lips, which I had a sudden hunger to kiss. My wolf nodded that this was what I needed to do, but my self-control was still intact so, ignoring my wolf, I lifted my arm in a gesture that she take it.

She closed the door and wrapped her small hand around my bicep, giving it a light squeeze as she came to stand by my side. She fit perfectly right next to me. My wolf purred, and she must have felt the rumble that ran through me because she tightened her hold and gave me the most mesmerizing smile. I took another deep breath so I didn’t crush her to me right then and there and kiss her until we couldn’t breathe.

“Do you like spaghetti and meatballs?” I asked.

“Yes?”

I had to laugh because the look she gave me was incredulous, and I had to admit that I’d thrown it out there. “Trust me, it’s the best you’ll ever have.”

“Okay, if you say so.”

“I say so,” I said, giving her a smile as I led her out of the apartment and to my car.
