“What if Millie chooses me? I hate to say it, but we really bonded over the last few days,” I said to Jacob. Looking around the room, I was glad my eyes could now focus and that I could easily move my limbs.

“Yeah . . . about that,” Jacob said hesitantly.

I narrowed my eyes. “What is it? What aren’t you telling me?”

Jacob rubbed his face and avoided the question. But I wanted answers. I nudged him with my foot.

He sighed. “I’m just the messenger, okay? It’s actually good news, if you think about it.”

“What is it, Jacob? Spit it out.”

“Jill and Becca went to visit Millie. Her sister was there. They realized the two of us had not known Millie has an identical twin.”

Twin? Millie is a twin?!

“Apparently, we’ve actually been dating two different girls. I was dating the real Millie. You were dating her twin, who was pretending to be Millie.”

My eyes widened. “They were vetting us too?”

“No, I don’t think so. My Millie was genuine; I could see it in her eyes.”

“Mine was too. I could tell that as much as you could with your Millie.”

“It’s a whole mess, isn’t it?”

“You said you went to visit Millie? Did you . . .” I ran a hand through my hair, gripping it tightly before running it back down my face. “Did you see my Millie when you went to see your Millie? Ugh! What is her name?”

“Lira.”

“Lira.” I fell back on my bed, reciting her name in my head. It felt right.

“And no, I didn’t. But I didn’t stay very long, either. It was also snowing, so any lingering smells were muted.”

“Right.” I sat back up. “So what now? I guess it was never really a competition, then.”

“Millie overheard us saying it was when we were fighting, so she’s pissed about that. I need to figure out a way to win her back, as all of you keep reminding me. And you have your mate to find too, apparently.”

“My mate who pretended she was someone else when dating me? I don’t know how I feel about that.”

Jacob eyed me and said pointedly, “Worth calling her and asking.”

“Yeah, maybe later.” She had pretended to be someone else the whole time she was with me. Did I even know her? My wolf growled at this, with its ears perked up and ready to tear me apart from the inside if I doubted my mate. I could feel she was genuine. But aren’t you a little bit wary you could have been tricked? I said to him. He growled at me again, this time getting so upset, he almost took over my body. Okay. Okay. We believe her.

Miti came in then with a big jar of liquid, which she thrust into my hand.

“Aw, Miti, do I have to?” I asked. Even I could hear the whine in my voice, but the drink was really bitter and there was a lot of it.

“Yes,” she said firmly. “You need to keep resting. You’re so close to getting back up on your own two feet, and I don’t want to take any chances. Now drink up.”

I did as she said, as we all knew there was no arguing with Miti. She’d put me under a spell if she needed to in order to get me to drink my medicine. I knew this because she’d done it before.

Bruno

The next afternoon, Miti finally gave me the okay to venture outside. I took full advantage and went straight to Jacob’s house to see what he was planning. But when I got to his place, I came across Brandon, who gave me a tight hug. Then he pushed me away, telling me how stupid I was for trusting Suzy and for getting in a fight with Jacob.

I just grunted, and at that moment the rest of my brothers showed up and gave me a hug as well. They told me that Jacob had made amends with Millie this morning and was trying to set up his secret place so he could take her on a date there later this evening. They wanted me to go to him and see if he needed any help setting up for his date. They also wanted me to gauge if the rest of them could come along and help as well.

Luc handed me a set of Christmas lights. He said he’d taken it out of the box Jacob had packed up for the occasion so that I’d have an excuse to go and visit. I laughed at the lengths my brothers would go to help each other. This was the type of family I wanted for Lira.
