“It’s gone. I don’t have it anymore.”

“What’s gone?”

“The flower.”

“What do you mean you had the flower? Are you saying you’ve had the flower this whole time?”

She nodded. “It was inside of me. Given as a gift a long time ago when I met Slick, my mate. I shared the power it gave me to Slick and our pack, and then paid the price over and over again for my mistake. I promised to never let it out again. But it’s gone, Miti, and I don’t know who has it!” She collapsed in the chair next to me, and her head fell in my lap as she cried.

I could only hold her as I felt tears running down my face as well. We were all doomed. I could only hope the flower had gone to someone who would do good.

“You ready to go?” Bruno asked.

“Yes, that was the last one.” I brought down the suitcase and noticed Bruno was looking at his hands like he’d never seen them before. “Is everything okay?”

He was clenching and unclenching his hand, shaking it as if there was something on it. “Yeah, everything is more than okay.”

“What’s wrong with your hands?”

He looked at me with a huge smile. “They’re not shaking anymore.”

“Should I know what that means?”

“If a wolf shifter meets his mate but is then separated from her and emotionally detached with no hope of getting back with her, the shifter will start losing his powers.”

“What would happen then?”

“They would eventually lose all their power and not be able to shift anymore. They would become human.”

“And die a mournful, sad death,” Charli said, floating in.

“That’s extremely morbid,” I said.

Charli shrugged. “It’s what would happen.”

“I’m glad we found each other then,” I said, clinging to Bruno and giving him a tight hug.

“I am too, my sweet one.” Tilting my chin up, he gave me a soft kiss before letting me go. Then he looked around the foyer at our luggage, as if seeing the suitcases for the first time. “You know we’re only going to see my family for a bit, not move there, right?”

“Not yet, at least,” I said, which made him smile. We had talked about me moving to Sugarville, and I knew he was hopeful.

Charli spoke up again. “You two should get going. Say hi to Miti for me. Tell her to come visit me more often. I get lonely here.”

I blew Charli a kiss. “We’ll be back before you know it.”

“I’m counting on it,” Charli said.

Bruno drove us to Sugarville, where Millie immediately crushed me in her arms.

“I’ve missed you so much!” she said. “I can’t believe you just up and disappeared without telling me where you were.”

“I’m sorry, Millie.” Turning to Bruno, I asked, “Is there a place where I can talk to Millie in private for a bit?”

“Yeah, I’ll show you to my place. Then I’ll let the other family members know you’ll be along in a bit.”

He led us into his house and then went to sit on the porch, leaving us to talk in private.
