He throws his head back and laughs. “When it’s just getting interesting. No, you are my common whore for the night, and you will love every second of it. You got the best prize there is. Me. Everyone wants the man in charge. The number one. The big mafia boss, the important one. You should be congratulating yourself on a successful outcome, and guess what?”

He spins around and leers, “When I’ve finished you will ruined for anyone else. You will beg me to stay. To be mine, but I will cast you to the next man because I couldn’t give a fuck about you.”

We reach the top of the staircase, and a wooden door is the only thing at the top of it. He pulls me through it into a small round room with no windows and nothing but a huge bed in the center, covered in red silk.

“Get on the bed.” He growls as he rips off his jacket and tie, tossing them to the ground in his haste.

I back away from his maniacal gaze and my voice shakes as I whisper, “Please, let me go?”

He laughs out loud and then screams. “Lie on the bed, you fucking whore!”

It makes me jump and I experience real terror when he turns and locks the door, tossing the huge iron key on the floor in the corner of the room and growls, “Nobody is coming for you, nobody will protect you and there is nobody to hear your screams.”

He drops his pants and yells, “I said get on the bed, you fucking filthy whore.”

He charges at me and slaps me hard around the face, causing me to fall back onto the bed with a painful squeal. He towers over me and growls, “Now spread your legs because this is going to hurt.”

I open my mouth to scream and then he falls with an angry roar. I stare in disbelief as he screams and then in wonder as Adonis appears from under the bed and grabs him by his hair, lifting him effortlessly in one hand and slamming him hard against the wall.

Hosea splutters, “You won’t get away with this. The guards will kill you before you make it down the stairs. There is only one way out of here and it’s in a body bag.”

Adonis growls as he tightens his hold around his neck. “I’ll take my chances with the guards, but the only body bag waiting has your name on it.”

My heart races as I sense the danger we are in. Hosea is right. The guards are everywhere and there is no other way out. We don’t stand a chance.

Adonis stares into Hosea’s eyes with the look of the grim reaper. “Did he hurt you, Melissa?”

“A little.” I rub my face that’s still burning and my voice trembles as the adrenalin gives way to the realization of what could have happened, could be happening now if Adonis wasn’t waiting for me.

Now one fear has been replaced with another because death is knocking on our door and I’m not quite ready to let it in.

Adonis growls, “You took two things that belonged to my family, Hosea and you will now suffer the consequences of that.”

“Two?” Hosea laughs as if he’s not in danger right now and Adonis hisses, “Melissa is my woman and the fuck I’m letting you lay your dirty hands on her.”

His woman! I stare at him in shock and a warm sensation passes through my soul as his words hit home. Does he mean that? Is he just saying it out of some masculine pride? My heart beats a different tune now as I stare at the man who has come to rescue me like something out of a fairy tale.

I hold my hand to stifle the scream that tears through my body as Adonis raises his fist and cracks it against Hosea’s head and a stream of blood flies from his nose as it breaks in a spectacular fashion. He screams in agony, and I wonder if the guards have heard and listen for the sound of running footsteps.

There aren’t any.

Adonis slams his head against the wall as Hosea attempts to struggle in his iron grip and Adonis punches him hard in the stomach, causing Hosea to scream out for the guards. I watch with a strange fascination as Adonis uses Hosea as a punching bag. His features are set in grim detachment, almost as if he is taking a workout in the gym. There is no urgency in his movements. It’s as if he has all the time in the world and is using it to settle something that has been a long time coming.

Hosea is weak in every way. He can’t fight back against a warrior like Adonis. He is struggling to breathe and I’m guessing his internal injuries are many and it strikes me that I am watching a man getting beaten to death before my incredulous eyes. Rather than being appalled by it, I am fascinated. This is what Adonis does. His occupation if you like and he has no emotion as he takes his enemy apart, only stopping when Hosea appears to be dragging in his last breath. He drops him and as Hosea slides down the wall, he kicks out at his groin and the howl of pain that emerges must surely be heard from Miami.

Then he turns to me.

The power that flashes from his eyes takes my breath away as he stares at me with an expression that is a mixture of concern and desire. My breathing intensifies as he says huskily, “Are you okay, baby?”

My knees tremble as I stare at the man I know my heart won’t give up on. He walked away from me, and I thought he didn’t want me. His eyes say otherwise and as I stumble toward him, those arms that just beat a man half to death catch me as I fall.

His lips fasten against mine as he kisses me with a hunger that matches my own and despite the man slumped at our feet, the most important thing right now is showing this man how much he means to me. His bloodied fingers tangle in my hair as he holds my head firmly, deepening the kiss and tying his tongue with mine. My heart pants and my soul celebrates as Adonis proves just how much he wants me and nothing else matters but this moment.

I thought I had lost him, but he’s here now. He came for me, and this kiss is telling me I never had anything to worry about at all.
