“Please, Apollo.” Her voice shakes. “I don’t want to see him again. Can we just leave?”

“We will not leave him alive to come for you again. He did it once and is mad enough to try a second time. Plus, you are not the only one who needs rescuing.”

“Who?”

Her eyes widen and I whisper, “Melissa. The woman who is currently with Hosea. She volunteered to help us rescue you.”

“Why?” Her eyes widen and it makes me laugh.

“Because she’s a fool, irritating and misguided. She is stubborn, and brave and so in love with my brother it’s scrambled her mind.”

“Adonis.” Phoebe’s in shock, and I laugh softly.

“He won’t admit he feels the same. They are both fighting the inevitable, and it will be fun watching them struggle with their feelings.”

I smile down at her beautiful face. “I have never denied my feelings for you, Phoebe. I love you and that has never changed. There has never been another woman for me.”

Her eyes sparkle with happiness, and I waste no time in kissing her deeply, with a passion I’ve held back for so long. There is no other woman for me. I accepted that the moment I first met her when we were kids playing on the beach all those years ago.

The relief in my heart is huge as I hold my one true love in my arms, and I pity anyone who tries to come between us again.

CHAPTER 58

MELISSA

Iam so frightened I almost can’t stand upright. The man currently gripping my wrist is intimidating as fuck and mainly because he is obviously insane. It’s as if he’s conducting a tour as he guides me around his property, remarking on the Greek statues that are positively littering the place. He speaks about them as if they are friends of his and accompanies his tale with mad laughter and my mind is struggling to keep up.

The house is deserted when we enter, and as we walk through the large ballroom, our footsteps echo eerily against the marble floor.

“I knew it would be you the minute I saw you.” He says conversationally and laughs hysterically.

“The most innocent woman in the room. Mikhail certainly knows how to pick them.”

He turns and runs an appreciative gaze down my body and hisses, “I can only imagine the beauty under those robes. The perfect skin, the untouched core, and the perfect canvas to wear my touch.”

He pushes me hard against the wall and grips my neck in one hand and leers, “I will strip you, mark your skin and tear through your innocence. I will claim your virtue and then punish you for giving it away so freely. You will be treated as a wanton whore who tried to tempt me from the path of righteousness. Who bewitched a mere mortal who holds the heart of a god.”

He jerks his head in the direction of the crucifix and snarls, “There stands a true goddess who forgives my sins every single time. I am assured of a place in heaven by her side because she loves me with her whole heart. I can do what the hell I like to you, and she will forgive me. It is doubtful you will ever forget your night on my island because when I’ve finished with you, there are many more waiting to take their turn.”

I swear I almost pass out as he runs his hand down my body and cups my breast through the thin fabric, his eyes gleaming as he says huskily, “No underwear, as ordered. Lucky for you, my request was followed.”

He lifts the toga and his fingers rest against my skin, and he closes his eyes and moans softly, his hand almost choking me as I struggle to breathe as he enjoys the most revolting exploration of my body.

I’m shocked when he starts to cry, huge sobs of pain that fill me with fear as he pinches my skin hard. He rests his head against mine and wails, “Forgive me, Psyche. I am a mere man with needs.”

Fucking hell, where is Mikhail? He promised!

Then, almost immediately, Hosea pulls away and says in a normal voice, “Come. We will continue this in the turret. You’ll like it up there. There is nobody around to hear you scream.”

He pulls me after him and I consider trying to get away. Running like hell for my life because I am out of my depth here. I should never have come. Never believed I’d be capable of this. I thought I was merely required to attend a party to locate Phoebe. Not this freak show. Not this threat to my sanity.

We pass two guards who stare blankly ahead of them, ignoring my pleas for help.

Hosea pulls me up a winding staircase and I’m in a blind panic. He is too strong, and I try to struggle, which only makes him laugh louder.

“I like it when they resist. It’s sweeter that way.”

“Please.” I find my voice and whisper, “Please let me go. I, um, I want to leave.”
