There is only one woman I have come here to see and that’s why it’s imperative I get first choice because the last thing I want is to touch any of these whores as I make my way through the rooms.

As I head down the hill, the women stare at me with sultry gazes. I’m almost positive they are hoping I choose them because the other men here are old enough to be their fathers.

The one I want is standing beside Ron Baines–Wilson, the banker from Wall Street. I note her downturned eyes and defensive body language and my heart hardens.

She knows.

I stop before her and grip her wrist and pull her away from Ron who nods respectfully.

Yes, Candice is the woman I have come to find, and I want nothing from her but answers.

We remain silent as we head down the hill and a gold painted escort directs us to room number two. Candice is shaking beside me because she knows me by name and reputation. It makes it easier to get answers and she will be no different.

The escort pouts in my direction as she whispers, “If you need anything sir, there is a gold bell in your room. I will be there within minutes to assist you.”

I know exactly what assistance she is offering. I have heard that many of the guests like to invite a third party and the escorts are here to provide anything required, even themselves.

“I won’t be needing assistance.”

I snap and slam the door, effectively cutting off all communication.

Candice gasps as I secure the lock and turn slowly, pointing to the bed.

“Sit.”

She falls back and stares at me through wide, frightened eyes and I grab a nearby chair and drag it to the center of the room and sit astride it.

“You know why I’m here.”

I don’t waste my words and she obviously realises she has no choice and says softly.

“I do.”

I watch as her fingers tangle in her lap and she chews on her lip. It merely shows me I was right to come here because Candice Berkley doesn’t get nervous easily. It’s why she’s in demand. Why she comes to most of these gatherings and why she is exactly the person I needed to see.

The clock is ticking, so I don’t waste my words.

“You knew my father.”

She nods, resignation heavy in her eyes.

“Tell me the name of his companion.”

Her tongue flicks out and moistens her lips and her skin pales as she gasps, “I promised.”

“Your promise means shit because my father is dead.”

Her eyes widen and I can tell this is the first she’s heard of it, which tells me she’s not involved.

“He was not a stranger here.”

Her voice shakes as she realises she has no choice.

“I, um, met him several times.”

“Was he always with the same woman?”

She hangs her head and whispers, “Yes.”
