“I’m aware.” She shakes her head and smiles brightly. “He’s always with me, Melissa darling. It comforts me thinking of him nearby.”

I reach out and grasp her hand and squeeze it gently. It hasn’t escaped my attention that today is the one-year anniversary of his death and mom must be suffering.

“Would you like me to come to lunch with you?”

She shakes her head. “No, darling. You have your plans and I have mine. We’ll catch up later over dinner.” She flicks her gaze at the end of the table and whispers. “All of us.”

I drop mom to the Riverside Plaza where she is lunching with one of her oldest friends. She appears in good spirits, and it makes me happy. Her welfare is my top priority because she has struggled to understand the ramifications of dad’s death. I wonder for the thousandth time if we should seek professional help because her usual shrink appears to be shit at what he does.

I head to the gym for my workout and my mind is full of a certain god I met up with yesterday. Men like Apollo don’t come into my life very often, if at all, and last night was one of the most interesting of my life.

He has more personality in one of his tattoos than any of the guys that hang around my crowd and, rather than be repelled by a man like him, it has the opposite effect. I desire him.

More than anything, I wish I had discovered what being with a man like him would be like and I’m irritated that I missed out on the opportunity of a lifetime.

Thoughts of Apollo consume me as I hit the weights, the treadmill, and the yoga class I attend every week and there is nothing else on my mind other than seeing him again.

CHAPTER 9

APOLLO

My brother is silent beside me as we wait for the car to appear over the brow of the hill.

“What’s up?” I say roughly as he kicks a stone into touch.

“This shit.” He growls. “It never ends and we’re no further forward.”

I share his frustration because it’s as if we have been searching for answers for half our lives and nothing is helping.

I caress the pain inside me as it reminds me once again why we are doing this. The real reason we walk this earth and the driving force behind everything we do.

“How’s your latest project?”

I attempt to drag him out of his slump, and he chuckles softly. “I like her.”

“You usually do.” I roll my eyes. “Have you fucked her yet?”

“No.” His answer is short, and he shrugs. “That’s more than my life’s worth.”

“I suppose.” I say with curiosity, “Does she know yet?”

I’m referring to the mafia princess Adonis has been tailing on the instructions of her grandparents. She knows nothing of her heritage, but the man she now calls boss knows everything and plans on using her to bring her family down.

“She knows what I want her to.” He says enigmatically and throws it back at me.

“Have you fucked the sister?”

“Almost.”

He raises his eyes. “Almost? What the fuck answer is that?”

“I don’t know.” I sigh heavily. “It didn’t seem right.”

For a second, he stares at me as if an alien has taken over my body and I snap, “Don’t read shit into it. She’s a lady, not a whore, and it didn’t feel right.”

He says nothing, which is a good move on his part because I’m still wondering what the fuck got into me last night. I don’t consider the woman’s feelings who come on to me. If they want to fuck, I’m happy to oblige, but Melissa Remington was something entirely different.

We hear the sound of an engine approaching and Adonis holds up his hand, the machine gun set on a stone, pointing to the brow of the hill.
