I notice Adonis nod and as they shake on it, he says in a deep voice, “Your sister will be safe with me.”

Troy nods as if satisfied and turns to me and says quietly, “I love you, sis, and I’ll be home before you know it.”

As the guard steps forward, Troy moves away from me and as I watch him leave, he doesn’t look back.

CHAPTER 30

ADONIS

Melissa Remington is an unexpected pleasure. When Apollo said she was something else, I didn’t really pay attention. I am now.

I can tell she is anxious as the boat shifts from the mooring, and she watches her brother disappear toward the house.

I step beside her and say softly, “He will be okay.”

“I think you’re right.”

She turns and I stare into the most bewitching green eyes and lose myself for a second. They flash with a brilliance that takes my breath away and I regard her with a curiosity that doesn’t escape me. Her long lashes dust her cheekbones and the unshed tears that sparkle in them do something to my heart. It’s a moment I will never forget because I’ve never had one like it before. The moment where I understand what love at first sight must be like.

I push it away with a derisory impatience. Love. What do I know of that outside of the one for family? Lust maybe, always lust, and this is what I must be experiencing now because I have an overwhelming urge to experience a woman like her.

I nod coolly toward the covered seating area where the stewards have laid out refreshment already.

“Let us shelter from the sun.”

She nods and appears so fragile as she stands before me, yet I witness an inner strength inside her that I’m curious about. I know their story. I know everything about them, but I know nothing about this woman. Apollo spoke of her fondly and I remember him holding back on her. For some reason, I’m happy about that. Not that it matters, not really. We have shared many women. Why would she be any different?

I curse my thoughts and file them away and take my seat at the table with my customary dark expression.

She perches beside me, and I hate that I inch a little closer just for the pressure of her leg against mine and I reach for a glass of crystal cool wine and hand it to her.

“To new beginnings.”

She glances back at the disappearing shoreline and smiles softly. “To new beginnings.”

As she sips the wine, I note her delicate fingers grip the stem of the glass, her perfectly manicured nails gleaming white in the sunlight. I say nothing because for some reason my mind is full of her and there are no words to describe how I’m feeling now.

She sighs as she sets the glass down on the table and whispers, “You say new beginnings. I hope that’s true.”

I say nothing, and she gazes at the spray hitting the boat with a soft sigh.

“I’m a little sad that this is over.”

“What is?”

“This trip, this episode in my life, I suppose.”

She turns and fixes those astonishing eyes on me, and my heart rate increases as she smiles into my eyes. “Troy will be fine. He’s a good man underneath the surly attitude and needs a woman like Laura to bring him in line.”

She gazes at me shyly.

“You are like your brother.”

“I know.” I shrug and she leans back and studies me with a thoughtful expression.

I say with interest, “You said he loved you.”

She nods. “He told me that.”
