CHAPTER 34

ADONIS

I’m not sure what happened when she left the table, but Melissa is finding it difficult to even look at me.

As we land in my home country, I breathe a huge sigh of relief. I’m home.

It is always a sweeter landing knowing I will soon be surrounded by the familiar and as the plane taxis to the stand, I take a glimpse of the place I leave my heart, every fucking time.

Melissa is nervous. It’s obvious as she chews her bottom lip and wrestles with her fingers, and as the plane stops, she lifts those gorgeous eyes to mine and smiles sweetly.

“So, here we are.”

I have an irresistible urge to reassure her. To wrap her in my arms and tell her everything will be okay. Not to worry about a thing because I’ve got her. Instead, I say coolly, “Follow me. It’s not far.”

I’m intrigued by the look that passes between her and Chloe as we say our goodbyes and wonder about the smirk on Chloe’s face as she winks at me as I pass.

She said something that’s for sure and if anything, it angers me. What has she said to Melissa and why do I have a feeling I’m not going to like it?

We are met by George; our usual driver, and he nods respectfully. “Mr. Constantine, sir.”

I roll my eyes. “Adonis. I’ve told you a million times.”

“Of course, Mr. Constantine.” It makes me grin as I thump him on the back and Melissa laughs softly as George winks at her and says with a smile, “Welcome to Greece, Miss. Remington.”

If she’s surprised he knows her name, she doesn’t show it and just grins. “Melissa, please.”

“Of course, Miss Remington.”

She catches my attention and the laughter in her eyes almost stops me in my tracks. Melissa appears to have the ability to prevent my heart from beating. I’ve never met a woman who has that skill and I’m not sure if I like it.

The staff toss our bags into the trunk and head into their respective cars and as we head out of the private airfield, Melissa says somewhat surprised, “Don’t we have to go through passport control? Come to think of it, we never did in Italy either. Have they relaxed the borders or something?”

“Why are you bothered?” I shrug. “We deal with the red tape in a different way than most.”

She shrugs. “I guess you do.”

Now we are sitting beside one another, I can feel the heat from her body against mine. I detect the scent of flowers and her bare arm occasionally brushes against mine as we turn corners.

It’s as if I can concentrate on nothing else and, to distract myself more than anything, I decide to torture myself even further.

“How do you feel about seeing Apollo now you know his history?”

“I’ll be happy to see him again.” She says with a simple smile. “I kind of figured things out for myself when Serena told me his sad story. I like him though but accept we will only ever be friends.”

“If circumstances were different, would you want more?”

I sound like a fucking teenage girl searching for all the gossip and I’m not sure what has come over me.

She sighs, and her wistful expression doesn’t make me feel any better. “Possibly. I guess I’ll never know.”

I shift away slightly because I don’t like what she’s doing to me inside. Why the fuck do I care if she’s keen on my brother? Many are, and it never bothered me before.

I stare moodily out of the window and try to force another subject into my mind and yet I keep going back to the woman beside me.

“What did Chloe say to you?” My thoughts become words, much to my surprise, and she obviously finds something amusing because she giggles softly.

“That she loves you.”
