What the actual fuck!

“Um, all three of you.”

I note her heightened color and the way she can’t look me in the eye tells me she knows exactly the nature of our arrangement with Chloe, and I’m irritated beyond belief. Chloe has overstepped her position. I’ve seen it coming for a while now. She believes that sex is more than just a physical gratification. She hopes for more and I warned my father about that, but he shrugged it off, saying that was her problem, not ours.

Now it’s mine because Melissa must be disgusted with me, Apollo and my father and I’m shocked to discover that bothers me—a lot.

CHAPTER 35

MELISSA

Ican’t believe I said that. From his reaction, he’s not too happy and now I’m worried that Chloe will suffer the effects of it.

I sigh and gaze out of the window at a gorgeous ocean that stretches into the distance, reminding me I’m a long way from home.

Adonis is a huge presence in more ways than just his size. When I close my eyes, I still see him, and he intrigues me. He is so like Apollo in appearance but has a more serious nature. His thoughts appear to run deeper, and I still haven’t figured him out.

He has an intensity that makes my breath hitch, and I am intrigued by this life they live.

Adonis is quiet and wrapped in his own thoughts and as the car slows, I peer out of the window with interest as the most amazing white beach house comes into view.

“Is this your home?” My eyes are wide as I stare at something I wasn’t expecting. It’s smaller than I thought and yet breath-taking. It sits on the edge of the ocean, surrounded by palm trees. It could be in a travel brochure as an executive escape or something. In the distance, I see a small jetty with a motorboat moored and the landscaped grounds that stretch around the property are filled with flowers and fruit trees.

Unlike Serenita, this place is more open. There are no guards, that I can see anyway. Beautiful Grecian urns spill bougainvillea, trailing almost to the floor and the building itself resembles a white marble statue as it rests in glorious sunshine.

“You have a beautiful home, Adonis.”

I am bewitched by this place and stare at him with delight.

For some reason, he appears shocked at that and his eyes stare deeply into mine with an expression of confusion, causing me to say nervously, “What?”

He tears his gaze away and shrugs. “Nothing.”

The door opens and as we step into the brilliant sunshine, I take a breath of the pure sea air and for some reason I feel instantly at home.

“Why do you ever leave this place? It’s magical.”

My words spill out into the air, causing him to raise his eyes. “Magical.”

It makes me giggle. “Yes, magical.”

He moves a little closer and then, to my surprise, reaches up and pushes my hair away from my face, holding it in his fingers as if he’s scared it will break. It’s an intimate gesture that surprises me. His touch is gentle and his eyes soft as he whispers, “Come. My father will be waiting.”

He drops his hand, and it’s as if my skin burns under the pressure of his touch and I catch my breath as I follow him into the house.

As I stare around in awe, it’s as if I’ve stepped into paradise. The cool interior is a welcome relief from the burn of the sun outside. Beautiful mosaics are everywhere, on the floor, the walls, and on the ceilings.

Grecian urns spill beautiful flowers at intervals and gorgeous rugs and paintings make the space homier than designer.

This is a home, not a statement, and I fall instantly in love.

We head into a light-filled room that overlooks the ocean. The bifold doors open, revealing a terrace outside. I note the large seating area underneath a canopy draped in white shade and underneath it sits a familiar face who jumps up as we approach.

“Melissa!” Apollo strides toward me with concern and, as I fall into his strong arms, they close around me like an old friend. He is familiar, safe even and now I realize what our relationship is, I am more than happy to be here with him.

He nuzzles my hair and whispers, “I’m sorry, baby.”

“For what?” I pull back and stare into his eyes with a soft smile. “For being a friend when I needed one. It’s okay. I’m aware of your situation and I want to help.”
