I decide not to ask if he considered she went willingly and merely say, “Were there any leads?”

“Just the photograph that was taken at Madeira Island.”

“The one you need an invitation to visit?”

“Yes.” He sighs heavily. “If you think Serenita is guarded well, it is nothing to the fortress Hosea Madeira has created on that island.”

“Who is he?” I’ve never heard the name before and he growls, “A Colombian drug lord. Sadistic, cruel, and unfeeling. His parties are likened to hell on earth where you can sin to your heart’s content with no repercussions.”

I shiver inside at the thought of poor Phoebe on that island, and I’m afraid for her. It doesn’t sound the kind of place for a woman like her and it makes me even more determined to help.

Apollo sighs as he turns and kisses me on the cheek, whispering, “If things were different–”

“I know.” I smile gently. “It’s okay. We will just be good friends. You saved me, and I kind of want to return the favor.”

His eyes glitter as he whispers, “It would be so easy to love you, Melissa Remington. I can tell why my brother has lost his mind.”

“Excuse me.”

He stands and winks as he heads to the door.

“Watch this space. You’ll soon learn that I’m always right.”

He leaves before I can question him.

He’s wrong. His brother is irritated by me. He probably doesn’t even like me and I absolutely hate the shiver of pleasure that passes through me as I hope with all my heart that I’m wrong.

CHAPTER 36

ADONIS

I’m not sure why I’m angry, but I sense it festering inside me as I wait for Apollo to return.

My father demands an explanation of what happened in the States. We’ve been away a while now helping the Vieris and it was because of our families close relationship.

We would do anything for one another, which is why they are helping locate Phoebe.

“Tell me about the girl.” My father says in his smooth voice, a hint of interest in his eyes.

“Melissa?” I ask, although I know exactly who he is referring to.

“Yes. Why is she here?”

I shrug. “She tells me Serena has asked her to help. She will accompany Mikhail Romanov to Madeira Island and help locate Phoebe.”

“Mikhail Romanov.” Dad shakes his head, a flicker of distaste lighting his eyes.

“Then I pity her.”

“Why?” My blood heats as I sense my father’s displeasure and he says roughly, “That man is a wild card. He has his own agenda, and I don’t trust him.”

I lean forward. “You don’t trust him with Phoebe or Melissa.”

“I don’t trust him full stop.”

He sighs heavily and leans back in his chair. “Mikhail Romanov gets the job done and doesn’t care how many bodies he leaves behind. Innocent or guilty, if they are in his way, he will cut them down, regardless. He is not in the best mind to do anyone favors right now because his attention is on his own problems, not ours.”

I say nothing and lean forward as my father shakes his head. “His father was murdered, and he is now on a mission to discover the identity of the person responsible. It surprises me that he has agreed to something so menial in his eyes, which makes me wonder if he has an ulterior motive.”
