I checked daily on my own mom, and she is thriving at Cedar Sands, which is her own mind retreat, I suppose.

Perhaps my actions are the result of my father’s death. I’m going off the rails and this is my rebellion.

As I lie on the sun lounger, I remember Adonis’s hands on me in this very spot and it causes a pang of grief to stab me at what might have been.

When I walk along the beach, I replay our conversations and when I stand at his mother’s grave I heed his warning.

Now that day has come and I’m heading to the private airfield to the Constantine jet and I’m nervous for an entirely different reason this time.

Will I make it back?

Dimitri steps aside like a gentleman for me to board and the first person I see is Chloe, who smiles warmly, “Welcome back.”

I’m a little uneasy around her now, especially not knowing what happened when Adonis took this same aircraft to Miami and so I smile and pass, acknowledging Christos with a brighter smile.

I hate knowing she has been with him since me and it makes me face up to the fact that I’m just another in a long line. If anything, she has more of him than most, and I hate that.

I take my seat and notice Dimitri whispering in her ear, and I close my eyes. For fuck’s sake. That’s all three then. Mind you, she’s had that pleasure before, all at once and so I keep my eyes closed to shut out this screwed up world that I fell into.

It doesn’t take long before we are airborne and after bringing us our drinks, Chloe disappears through the curtain and it’s not long before Dimitri follows her.

I hate this life.

That is what I’m telling myself because I’ve fallen headfirst into a dirty saga that I have no control over.

I head to the galley to find Christos who is preparing the meals, and he peers up in surprise.

“I’m sorry, Melissa, would you like something?”

“No.” I sigh as I lean against one of the carts and say sadly, “I don’t know how you handle this.”

He raises his eyes and whispers, “I expect you’re referring to my fellow flight attendant.”

I shrug, my misery obviously evident because he sets down the plate he is holding and heads closer.

“Don’t judge Chloe too harshly. She had a bad beginning and the Constantine’s have given her everything.”

“You can say that again.” I shake my head. “Was it like this when Sylvana was alive?”

I sincerely hope not, and Christos shakes his head, a sad expression in his eye.

“No. It was very different then. Dimitri never looked at another woman. Apollo was with Phoebe and Adonis, well, he’s always been a free agent.”

“I guess he always will be.”

Christos whispers with a small smile, “We flew to Miami last, with Adonis and Apollo?”

“Spare me the gruesome details.”

All I can picture is the three of them getting cozy in the cabin and Christos grins. “Chloe was pissed. They didn’t want to know.”

“They didn’t!”

My eyes widen and he nods. “It was a long flight too. Usually, they spend it entertaining themselves with Chloe, but she was left in no doubt her services would only include food and drink on this occasion.”

“What did she say?” I’m intrigued and extremely grateful to Christos for telling me.

“She was upset.” He shrugs. “You see, Chloe thrives on this. It’s why she does the job. The Constantines are her drug, and she hates it when she can’t get any.”
