“Repercussions?” Mikhail adds and Lucian shakes his head.

“Accidents happen and blame is attributed to that. It merely must look like it.”

Mikhail leans back and Lucian says darkly, “The guards will change when Hosea arrives. The current ones are at the end of their stint and the two helicopters will return with them, dropping off their replacements. I trust you have briefed your men.”

Mikhail nods. “They are ready.”

He turns to us. “Take your positions on the boat on the ocean side of the island. There is a hillside dropping into the sea. Wait for us there.”

“What is the evacuation plan?” Apollo says gruffly.

Mikhail nods. “We locate the girl and replace her with my companion.”

“What the fuck!”

Apollo rests his hand on my arm and says roughly, “Run this past us.”

Mikhail’s’ eyes glitter as he stares at me with a hard expression, and I throw one right back at him. Over my dead body is Melissa replacing Phoebe.

Lucian glances between us, more with interest than anything, and Mikhail says roughly, “My companion will distract him. We move in and get Phoebe to safety and then go back for this woman.”

“She has a name.” I growl and Apollo says quickly, “Her name is Melissa.”

Mikhail appears thoughtful and glances between us and then says with a shrug, “Understood.”

He turns to Lucian. “Is the helicopter on standby?”

Lucian nods, his eyes glittering with a darkness that reminds me of the company I keep. I understand his mind. I live his life and it’s obvious he is enjoying every minute of this.

The Romanos operate in Florida, their home is Miami. His home turf if you like. The Madeira’s are often getting in their way, trying to muscle in on their turf and bring their drugs in under the radar. The two families have an agreement, but Hosea was a loose cannon in that. Marcos is more agreeable and runs it more as a business and prefers to keep the Romanos as friends rather than enemies. They are walking a fine line, and this operation will make or break their friendship, so I’m not surprised he is the brains behind the operation because it affects his business more than anyone.

Mikhail reaches for his ever-present glass of vodka and chucks down the contents as if it is water. Then he glances at the Rolex on his wrist and catches my eye as he says roughly, “I believe my companion is on her way with Mr. Constantine. They will be here shortly.”

At the mention of Melissa, my heart pounds and I do everything in my power to remain expressionless. I walked out on her. I fucked her and left, and she must hate me.

I still haven’t forgiven myself for that, but it was necessary. She is stubborn. So fucking stubborn it made me mad. She is putting herself in danger despite what I said. For what? For strangers she’s only just met, and she doesn’t understand the consequences of that.

I need to keep my distance and I am shutting down my infatuation with her, but I already know I’m lying to myself. Just the mention of her name from Mikhail’s lips caused my hackles to rise and I know I need to be as far away from her as possible right now if this mission is to work.

I stand and nod to Apollo, addressing Mikhail and Lucian.

“Then we should get in place and wait for your instructions.”

Lucian nods and stands with us.

“I will make sure the path is cleared. I trust your guards are already in position.”

Mikhail nods, and I don’t miss the spark in his eye as he stares at me thoughtfully. Then he stands and shakes our hands in turn.

“To success.”

We nod collectively. “To business.” I add, and Lucian grins devilishly.

“Fuck, I love my job.”
