Not long now.

I check the time and know we probably have thirty minutes. As the door closes on the mansion, I shift from my position and my heart races as I move stealthily through the darkness.

I can’t fuck this up.

Phoebe’s life depends on it and as I near the crucifix, I prepare my emotions accordingly.

The night is warm and balmy, with only a gentle breeze to calm my heated skin. I am dressed entirely in black; the mask covering my face, ensuring I fade into the shadows like a demon shrouded in sin.

As I approach, there is no noise at all, only the sound of the waves crashing to shore and I prime my gun and, with a deep breath, I step out of the shadows and growl, “Leave.”

The man on his knees jerks his head up and stares in disbelief as I materialize out of the shadows and point my gun at him, and he wastes no time in scurrying to his feet as a low ‘fuck’ escapes his lips.

I nod to one of the guards, hoping like hell they are briefed and I’m not walking into certain death and to my considerable relief, one of them pushes the man and hisses, “Your evening is over. Make your way to the boat.”

He escorts him down the hill and the other guard lowers his sword and nods to me with respect and follows his comrade down the hill, tearing off his mask as he heads toward the waiting boat.

I swear my heart is pounding as I turn to the woman I love, and I almost buckle under the weight of emotion as I stare into her beautiful eyes that were once so full of life.

She whispers, “If you haven’t come to rescue me, then please kill me now.”

I step forward and remove my face covering and stare into her eyes and whisper, “I searched for you for two lonely desperate years and your life is more important than my own.”

Her eyes fill with tears as she gasps, “Apollo.”

I step closer and reaching up, cup her beautiful face, removing her mask tenderly and whisper, “I’m here. You’re safe now, baby girl.”

Her tears flow as she sags against the crucifix, and I waste no time in cutting her restraints and as she falls into my arms, I wrap them around her as if I am holding the most precious thing in the world and to me, I am.

I’m overwhelmed with emotion as she shakes in my arms and I stroke her hair and whisper, “I’m so sorry it took me so long.”

She pulls back and her eyes sparkle as she stares at me as if I’m a ghost. “You came for me. I prayed so hard to see you again. It’s the only thing that got me through.”

I cup her face in my hands and stare at a beauty I barely hoped I’d ever see again and as I bend my lips to hers, my heart races in anticipation.

This is the sweetest kiss of my life as I taste the woman I love once again. The one woman I have never given up on and the only woman who has my heart. I kiss her as if she will break. As if she is an unbelievable dream and as she kisses me back, I know I will make it my life’s ambition to keep her safe.

She is so fragile in my arms. As if she could snap at any minute and as I pull away, I stare in wonder at the love shining from her eyes.

“Apollo.” She beams with delight. “It’s really you.”

My heart is full as I say huskily, “You better believe it, baby girl, and just so we’re clear, you’re coming home with me.”

The relief on her face brings tears to my eyes as she whispers, “I thought of you every hour of every day we have been apart. I knew you would come.”

It breaks my heart when I think how long she has been waiting and it merely stokes my hatred for the man who took her in the first place.

She shivers in the breeze, and I tear off my jacket and drape it over her shivering body.

“What happens now?” She says, glancing around her in fear.

“We wait.”

Her eyes widen as I pull her down beside me and wrap my arm around her, pulling her into the heat of my body.

“Wait?”

I hiss, “We won’t let Hosea get away with this. Adonis will bring him here to pay for his sins.”
