Me: Looks like you were missed…not surprising ;)

Kelsey: Are you ok?

That’s the million-dollar question today. First I was anxious, now I’m pissed off.

Me: I’m surviving. I’ll be better when I see you later ?

Kelsey: I’ll stop by practice before I head home

Me: Sounds good Angel ?I love you

Kelsey: I love you too ?

I find myself on edge the entire morning, watching the clock — waiting, wondering if this douchebag is actually going to show up, or if he booked the appointment just to fuck with me and my business.

Frankie calls over to me from the other bay. “Dude, you need to calm down. I can hear your mind racing a mile a minute over here. Focus on what you’re doing and stop worrying about what her ex wants. For all you know, he really does just want an oil change.”

“Yeah, not likely. You haven’t had any interactions with this guy — he’s a Grade-A narcissistic asshole. He is out there acting wounded that Kelsey dumped him when she found out he had been cheating on her.”

“Either way, stop worrying about what could potentially happen here, and pay attention to the task at hand. You’ve been working on that oil change for 45 minutes.”

Frankie has always had a low tolerance for drama. Not to say that I love drama or anything, but it always seems to find its way into my life. With the potential threat looming at the back of my mind, I do as Frankie suggested and focus on the work in front of me.

By the time 12:45 rolls around, I’m pacing around the office, waiting for this asshole. I’m pretty sure I’ve worn a hole in the linoleum at this point. I hear his car before I see it pull into the parking lot. This dude screams overcompensation for a small dick. By the time he makes his way into the shop office, I’m standing behind the desk with my arms crossed and a scowl on my face.

“Hi, I have a 12:45 appointment,” Grant announces with a smug expression.

“Not here, you don’t.” I can feel my jaw twitching from how tightly I’m clenching it.

“This is Brooks Body Shop, right? I called here yesterday to make an appointment.”

“And I have the right to refuse service,” I spit back.

“On what grounds?” Spoken like a true lawyer, he’s questioning my every move.

I’m trying to keep my answers as minimal as possible, so he has less ammunition to use against me if he’s trying to cause problems. “Conflict of interest.”

“Oh, come on, Brooks. Surely, you can put such petty differences aside for the sake of your business.” The evil smirk that takes over his face has my fists wound tight.

I’ve been on high alert since he walked in, but I refuse to give into his manipulative antics. “You have five seconds to get out of my shop before I call the police and have you arrested for trespassing.”

He scoffs as if I’ve said the most preposterous thing he’s ever heard. “I work for the District Attorney — they’re not going to arrest me.”

“Well, unless you care to test that theory, I suggest you listen to my boss here and leave,” Frankie chimes in from the doorway that leads to the bays.

“Fine, I’ll go. But mark my words, Brooks — this is far from over.”

Chapter 38

Once I’ve got Daisy and Dominic settled for their tutoring session in my classroom, I head out toward the football field to see Joey. Overall, today was a much better day than earlier in the week — I only had a couple of bouts of cramping, but not nearly as severe as that first day.

The strangest part of my day was the awful feeling I got in my gut around lunch time. It was riddled with anxiety, and I have no idea what caused it.

My heart races as I spot Joey standing next to the bench, and I have to remind myself that he’s not some unattainable heartthrob anymore — he’s my boyfriend. Regardless of this fact, my thighs still rub together at the sight of him.

“Hey, hot stuff!” I call from the bleachers with a smile.

“There’s my girl,” he shouts back as he jogs toward me. When he reaches me, he scoops me up in his arms and spins me around. “I missed you today, Angel.”
