“I missed you too.” I search his eyes for the worry that I assume sat there all day, but I don’t find it — instead, I find aggravation. “What’s wrong?”

He sighs loudly as he darts his gaze away from mine. “We may have a problem.”

My heart sinks into my stomach — a million different problem scenarios run through my mind before I can muster up the energy to ask what it is.

“What kind of problem?”

“A Grant-type problem. He tried to bring his car in for an oil change today, and when I refused to serve him, he more or less threatened me.”

“Threatened you how?” I cross my arms in frustration while I wait for his answer. That fucker has a lot of nerve.

“He just said that the problems between us are far from over.” His eyes meet mine once again. “I think we need to get a restraining order against him.”

My blood boils at the thought of Grant threatening Joey. I know that it’s all my fault, and that a restraining order won’t do shit. He works for the town hall, for fuck’s sake — he’d have that reversed before I could even sign it.

“I’ll handle it —” I start, but am quickly cut off.

“Kelsey, no. I don’t want you going anywhere near him. He already tried to attack you once.” Joey’s protective instincts are coming out hard. While I think it’s incredibly sexy, I can’t stand by and watch Grant try to cause problems for Joey just because he’s with me.

“Babe, he’s not going to stop unless I stop him. He needs to know that I’m not afraid of him and that this is over.”

Joey’s eyes pierce mine and his jaw ticks — he’s thinking long and hard about what he wants to say right now. He clearly wants to continue to fight me on this, but he also knows that I’m as stubborn as he is and won’t let this go.

“Will you at least take Savannah with you, so I know you’re not doing this alone?”

I bite back my instinctive reaction to tell him I don’t need a buffer — mainly because I feel like we could go around in circles for hours about this. “Fine, I’ll stop by the pub and grab her on my way over to town hall. I’ll take care of this and I’ll see you at home.”

My agreeing to his request softens his expression a little, but I can tell he’s still not stoked about the situation. “Please be careful, Angel. I don’t want to see anything happen to you.”

I sincerely hope that he wouldn’t be stupid enough to try to pull something in the middle of town hall, but you never know. I pull Joey into my arms, breathing in the scent of his cologne, and whisper “I love you” in his ear.

“I love you too, Kelsey.” I can hear the tremor in his voice, causing a conflict within me.

Part of me feels like I need to do this to get Grant off of our backs. The other part of me feels guilty about Joey’s trepidation. At the end of the day, I can’t shake the feeling that Grant won’t stop until I somehow make him.

I pull back away from Joey’s body and give him a gentle kiss before I step away. “I’ll see you at home.”

Joey reluctantly lets me go, and I can feel the burn of his gaze on me as I walk away from the field. On my way to my car, I text Savannah.

Me: SOS. I’ll be at the pub in 10 min to pick you up

Savannah: Is everything ok?

Me: I’ll explain when I get there

Savannah: Getting ready now

On my way to the pub, I can’t help but stew about Grant trying to fuck things up for me. We were together for two years, and I can’t recall a single time he showed even half of this level of interest in what I was doing. Why does he all of a sudden care so much? One thing has become abundantly clear to me over the past couple of weeks — I never loved him. I was blind to who he really was and became enamored with the idea of who I thought he was.

Savannah is waiting outside the pub when I pull up to the curb. She’s wearing the same look of concern on her face that Joey has been the past few days.

“Are you feeling okay?” she asks as she gets in the car.

“In that aspect, yes.” I pause and glance over at her. “Grant’s causing problems, and I’m going down to town hall to sort it out.”

“Not that I don’t love to witness a good bitch fit, but why does that involve me?”

“My super-protective boyfriend insisted that I bring you along so that I wasn’t confronting him alone. Grant kind of… cornered me in a restaurant last weekend when I was out with Joey. I may have smashed his nose and gotten him thrown out of the building.”
