Ysma shook her head. “Not really. The researchers were using me to absorb other activations. Turns out, all I could do was copy them and use them once, or at least, that is what I told them. I have accumulated sixty different activations.”

Xeva’s mouth dropped open. “Holy shit.”

“Nelith’s bloodline was extremely strong. Even Zella could be great, but she chose a path that benefited herself over others. She even hung back when she could have used me to rescue people, but she would have had to have stepped back and let me free, but she wouldn’t, so I couldn’t.”

“Fuck. That must have been frustrating.”

“Infuriating. I have a huge population-protection instinct, and she didn’t. It drove me nuts.” Ysma smiled. “When I leave you today, I am going to go and act on that instinct.”

Xeva blinked. “What is going on?”

“Another island-killing wave four hundred miles west. It will get to a point where I can act on the wave about thirty miles off their coastline.” She shrugged. “Then, I come back here. I should be back early in the morning.”

“Do you know where the village is? You can come there.”

“Nope. Not doing that. I am going back into the trees and sleeping for a day.”

Xeva reached for her hand, and Ysma pulled back. “Please come to the village and be safe.”

“Sorry about dodging the contact, but that is how I copy actives.”

“Does it drain the active?”

“No. It just copies your activation. No mental transfer, so I have to learn how to use it, but that is how I copy the template and add your horse to my collection.”

Xeva smiled. “I will offer you that if you like. I am still recovering from dying, so I don’t have access to it if I need it.”

“I don’t want to take anything from you. Or anyone.”

Xeva looked at her worried expression and tried to imagine what she had gone through. Betrayed by the one who was supposed to be on her side simply because they were together. Nelith had wanted the best for her. Her freedom and health were Nelith’s concern, and getting her out had been Xeva’s. Without someone like that on her side, Xeva would never have made it.

They read the menu, and Xeva smiled. “You will take food. That much I can offer you without any trouble.”

Ysma nodded. “And I will accept it.” She smiled. “I have really missed eating. I have eaten all the rations in the shuttle.”

“Oh, shit. Right. Order what you like.”

Ysma picked two entrées and a salad.

Xeva ordered three entrées and a pile of desserts. “Jeron has a sweet tooth.” Xeva smiled and said, “Do you have a list of things you want to do?”

“I do. But I have to find a country that will take me without selling me to the Sethir.”

Xeva blinked. “Why would they want you?”

“Flatterer. I manifested as an omega. It is probably part of the draw Zella had as she is not an omega.”

“Oh, no. That’s... not good.”

“I know. I had no idea that the Sethir used this place as a holiday getaway. If I had known, I would have fought the visions and ended up somewhere else.”

“What do you see for your own future?”

Ysma frowned. “I just see blue, green, and black. A bit of silver.”

Xeva closed her eyes and ran through the catalogue of actives she had met. “I have no idea who that could be.”

“So, you are going to stay here?”
