“We’re not giving him ten years,” Matt said.

“No,” Nina agreed. “My boss would never agree to it, and he’s usually the first to want to plead down.”

“I think he gave the gun to Chavez,” Matt said.

Brian shook his head. “I don’t believe it. He killed Bryce. He’s playing us.”

“He’s playing, but he’s not lying. He has no reason to lie. He enjoys the game.”

“Why would Rebecca kill Bryce?”

“To frame Kara and divide us. Have you found out whether Chavez tracked Kara’s GPS?”

“She wiped her computer. We’re rebuilding it now.”

“My guess is she found out Kara dumped her phone near the dog park and then Chavez sent Bryce there. Knowing he would go to meet an informant with dirt on Kara. We need the origin of the messages to Bryce Thornton.”

“Eighteen years,” Nina suddenly said.

“No. Thirty. We agreed to thirty.” Matt didn’t want Conrad James to ever get out of prison. He had a feeling the man would hunt Matt down just to fuck with him. “We’ll make the case. We need Rebecca to talk. I changed my mind, Brian. I want to go with you.”

“Good cop, bad cop?” Brian said without humor.

“Yes.”

Reluctantly, Nina and Brian agreed.

Matt went back into the room. Shut the door, but he didn’t sit down. “Thirty, or no deal and we prosecute you to the maximum allowed by law.”

Conrad nodded. “Yes, I do like you, Matt. Very much. Good luck.”

Matt turned to leave.

“And, Matt? If you think I’m going to be in prison for five years, let alone thirty? You’re lying to yourself.”

Matt walked out.

While Kara waited for Matt to be done with Conrad James and the FBI, she headed to LAPD headquarters and ran into Charlie Dean outside of Lex’s office. She hadn’t had a real conversation with Lex or Elena since everything went down, didn’t know if she wanted to.

Colton walked in. Charlie glared at him. “You’re a fucking bastard, you know that?”

“Hey, it was the job.”

“No, it wasn’t the fucking job. You and Lex can both go to hell. I pulled my papers today. I’m outta here.”

“Charlie, I really am sorry. It was important—”

“Do you know how many friends I’ve lost in the line of duty? Two. It used to be three when I thought you were six feet under. Each one is still with me. It hurts. I never want to see you again.”

Kara put her hand on Charlie’s arm. “I’ll come see you before I go, if that’s okay?”

“Can we maybe meet up at a bar? Dinner? Here... I’m not going to be here long. I can’t do it anymore.” Charlie glared at Colton.

“I’ll call you this weekend,” she said to Charlie, then gave him a hug.

When Charlie left, she turned to Colton and motioned for him to follow her. They went into an empty office across the hall. “You hurt a lot of people.”

“We’ve both followed orders we didn’t like. It’s the job.”
