Dr. Attersby smiles. “Yes, that soon.” Then she wheels her stool closer to Vee. “I know it can be daunting. From your records you haven’t had a natural heat since your first? Is that right?”

Holy shit.

Vee glances at me, her face flaming. “That’s right. I-It hurt too much to go through them alone. Even with the suppressants, it was painful.”

The older woman reaches out and touches her arm, patting it gently, and I have to stop myself from snarling at her ‘mine’. The poor woman is a doctor and an omega. She is not hitting on my girl.

“Yes, they can be if you aren’t able to match with a pack to help ease the pain.” Dr. Attersby slides her gaze to me. “However, it sounds like this time you will have a pack ready to assist?”

I nod, biting back that possessive snarl again. I really shouldn’t have come to this appointment. Fuck, none of us alphas should. Topher would have been the best choice for this. He’d at least be able to tamp down on the instincts better than I am.

Vee smiles at me and runs a hand through my hair. “Yes. They will be there.”

The doctor nods. “Then you have nothing to be worried about.” She stands up and pushes the stool back in front of the computer and then goes to open a cabinet, pulling out supplies. “I’ll do the blood draw here. I can’t guarantee which tech you’d get if I sent you to the lab, and I have a feeling your alpha won’t take kindly to some male poking you with a needle.”

Yeah, the image of another man’s hand smoothing over her forearm, finding her vein. No fucking thank you.

“That’s probably a good idea,” Vee says, still running her fingers through my hair. “You’ll be able to get it tested today?”

The doctor nods as she turns back to face us. “Yes, I’ll put in a rush order for you. I know how these things can be.”

I frown, not quite understanding what she means by that. Though I appreciate the rush order. But I’d rather they be thorough in making sure my omega can safely stop taking her medication. I’m not in any hurry to get my dick wet during her first real heat in four years… well, I am, but I want to do it safely.

I stand up to watch as Dr Attersby takes Vee’s blood, monitoring my woman for any sign of distress or of the doctor taking too much. But nothing seems amiss and Vee is all smiles, chatting happily.

I watch as a bandaid is placed over the small pinprick of a wound, and then Vee’s hopping off the table.

“That’s it?” I ask. It seems like there should be more. Like there should be a battery of tests to make sure her body can handle this. Fuck, when I think of all the pain she’s already gone through, the achy muscles, the nausea, the headaches and the fatigue, I want to demand more.

The last thing I want is to rush into this and have Vee get fucking sicker.

Dr. Attersby smiles at me, not unkindly, but still pretty fucking condescending. “Yep. That’s it. We’ll run a full spectrum of tests, make sure her hormones are in a good place. I suspect spending time with your pack has already helped immensely. And like I said, we’ll monitor her closely and make sure nothing goes wrong as she transitions off the suppressants.”

Vee smiles at me, links her hands with mine. “You know, most omegas that take suppressants just stop taking them without a battery of tests and a doctor checking on them. And they’re totally fine.”

My fingers tighten around hers. “You’re not most omegas, pipsqueak. You’re ours.”

She tugs until I’m facing her, her free hand coming up to caress my cheek. “I know. And that is why I’m here, letting Dr. Attersby take my blood. Because I appreciate that you all need to make sure it’s safe.”

“God, you guys are cute.” I look up to find the doctor with her hands clasped in front of her, beaming at us. “I promise, Mr. Werth, if I find any reason at all that it will be unsafe for Sylvie to stop taking the medication, I will let you know and we’ll discuss other options.”

My alpha is still begging me to do more, but it’s not like I have a medical degree. I can’t really argue with her. So if she says they’ll do everything to keep my omega safe and healthy, I have to believe her.

Apparently, I’m destined to be nervous today.

But I knew that going into it. I have some things I need to tell Vee, some things she needs to know before she stops taking her medication. My packmates might hate me by the time I’m done, especially if she decides it’s too much and she wants to wait.

But I can’t keep this from her.

She deserves to know.

“Its still here?” Vee asks, staring with wide eyes at the little cabin that we bought for her when she was just a teenager. Not just her, but for us. Our little oasis.

I glance at her out of the corner of my eye. “Of course it’s still here. What did you think we’d tear it down the second you left?”

She lifts a shoulder. “I guess I kind of thought it would still be here, but… rundown.” She runs her eyes over the fresh paint and the new roof, the flowers that line the porch. “But you’ve been taking care of it.”

I pull her into my side and kiss her temple. “We did. This is our place, Vee. We would never fucking abandon it.” I jerk my chin toward the far side of the clearing. “We built our pack house just over there. Bought up every piece of land we could to do it. We own most of the forest now.”
