My story had taken shape after my talk with Bootsy. I knew exactly the direction in which to take the article, and I was itching to let my hands fly over my keyboard as the story flowed out of me. It was my favorite part of writing––that moment when the words were yours but the story took on a life of its own.

Still, I couldn’t force myself to get into my car and head back to Chicago.

Not yet.

I had walked a bit farther down the path when a small pile of rocks and seashells caught my eye. I looked down, moving the debris with my frigid toes, a glint of purple catching my eye. I bent to examine it, holding it up to the overcast light on the beach.

A small, smooth triangle of purple sea glass glittered.

“Purple’s the rarest, you know.”

Taken aback by the deep rumble of Huck’s voice, I stumbled, my ass landing squarely on the sand just as a wave inched up the shoreline, soaking me.

“Ah, that’s cold!” I shouted as I scrambled to gain my footing, the sea glass pinched between my fingers.

Huck’s hands gripped my biceps as he hauled me upward. “Damn it, Cass. I didn’t mean to startle you.”

He pulled me closer, warming me in his arms. Once he checked me over, he dragged a hand through his thick, dark hair. “You’re soaked and going to get chilled.” He moved his head in the direction of town. “Come on.”

Already feeling the chill of a soggy bottom and the stinging breeze of fall, I shivered. Huck shook his head before scooping me up in his arms. I smiled at his tense jawline as he stared ahead and stomped down the beach.

“What are you doing here?” I whispered, taking a moment to breathe in the delicious scent of his aftershave.

He paused and looked down at me. His bright blue eyes held all the hope and promises I’d tucked away in my heart. “I came to get my girl.”

He sealed his promise with a kiss. A promise of so much more.
