“Ah. I see,” he said again, his brows drawing together. “See me in my office on Monday. My PA will set up an appointment.”

His ominous words should have filled me with unease, but all I felt was relief. I could deal with the consequences of my actions, and most importantly, I no longer needed to prove anything to myself. With a nod, I excused myself, heading straight for the exterior door. As I pushed it open, I swerved to avoid Gage, who was entering at the same time I was exiting.

“Kill! Leaving already? That has to be a record, even for you.”

“Yeah. It’s JJ’s dance showcase tonight. By the way, I withdrew my application for the head of our department.”

His jaw dropped. “You what? This makes no sense! What the fuck happened to you, mate?”

I shrugged, a grin spreading across my face. “I fell in love. I hear it makes people do crazy things.”

“Fucking hell,” he muttered, rubbing his jaw. “In that case…good luck. Say hi to your man from me. Oh, and tell him no more office blowjobs. Or at least lock the fucking door.”

With a salute, I jogged away, leaving him shaking his head with a slightly confused smile.

Hailing the first black cab that showed up, I slid inside.

The driver turned to greet me. “Alright? Where to, mate?”

“The LSU campus, please.”

Reaching the LSU theatre, I encountered my first problem. No ticket. I had to hope my staff ID would get me inside, otherwise I’d have to resort to slightly more illegal methods.

“There you are, Killian. I’ve been waiting for you.”

“Glynis?”

She smiled at my surprise. “Hello, dear. My, don’t you look handsome tonight? Are you ready to go inside? We have front-row seats. My eyesight isn’t what it used to be, you know.”

What was happening? How did she know I was going to be here when I hadn’t even known myself?

“I have our tickets.” The man holding her arm patted his pocket with his free hand, and I realised that he was wearing the staff uniform of the retirement complex carers. “We’d better get inside so Glynis has time to get comfortable.”

“Hush now, Bryn. Don’t fuss. I’m perfectly fine.”

I suddenly realised I hadn’t greeted her properly, and that wouldn’t do. “Glynis.” I lifted her hand and placed a kiss to the back of it. “You look beautiful.”

“You charmer. I wore this dress when I sang for the American president many years ago, you know. He was rather taken with me, by all accounts.”

Bryn coughed to disguise a snort of amusement, and a smile spread across my face. I loved JJ, and I suddenly realised I loved this woman in front of me. She’d nurtured JJ, helped to shape him into the amazing man I knew, and she was such a joy to be around. I was privileged to have her in my life.

Pressing a kiss to her cheek, I murmured, “Allow me to escort you inside.”

As her arm slipped through mine, she laughed lightly. “Escorted by two handsome men. If only Barbara could see me now. Bryn, make yourself useful and take one of those selfie pictures, please. Make sure you get us all in.”

Smothering a smile, he rolled his eyes but took out his phone anyway and snapped a picture. “Done. You know, this isn’t in my job description, G.”

“Neither is escorting me to a dance showcase, yet here you are. Could you send the picture to Barbara? Thank you.”

“Always taking liberties, G. The things I do for you, I swear. I should get a pay rise.”

“Pfft. You get paid plenty. Don’t forget the chocolates I save for you every week, too.”

I laughed at their exchange, glad to see that she had people looking after her who got her, who were genuinely happy to be around her. And who wouldn’t be?

She coughed dramatically. “Need I remind you that I’m on my deathbed? Do you want me to turn into a corpse before we get in the door? Hurry up, please!”
