“Good. We’ll consider the matter settled.” Glancing at his computer screen, he frowned. “While I’ve got you here… Since my preferred candidate has withdrawn his application, do you have any thoughts on a potential future head of the department?”
One name came to mind immediately, and I knew he’d be perfect for the role. “Stuart. He’s reliable, he’s a team player, and he thinks things through before he acts. Not only that but he’s respected by everyone in the business school. He’d be a solid choice.”
“Stuart, hmm?” A thoughtful expression crossed the vice chancellor’s face. “Yes. Stuart. Right. You’ve given me a lot to think about. If you’ll excuse me, I need to set up a meeting with John.”
It was my cue to leave. Rising from my chair, I shook his hand, thanking him again. I’d been fully prepared to look for another job if he’d given me an ultimatum or disapproved of my relationship with JJ, but things had worked out even better than I could have hoped for.
Stepping into the sunshine, I headed for the performing arts block to give my boyfriend the good news.
Outside the building, I found two familiar figures in deep discussion. “A cupboard, JJ! What were you thinking?”
“I’m thinking you owe me some thanks. Bennett’s really into you, from what Ander’s been telling me.” JJ grinned down at Niccolò, and my own smile spread across my face, happy because he was happy.
“Hmm. I suppose— Oh! Daddy K! Hi!” Niccolò caught sight of me, bounding over to me and giving me an exuberant hug.
Daddy K? I mouthed to JJ over the top of Niccolò’s head, awkwardly patting his back, and JJ bit back a smirk, but then his expression turned serious.
How did it go? he mouthed back.
I grinned before glancing down at the person still wrapped around me.
“Niccolò. I told you not to call me Daddy.”
He released me, pouting. “But—” He registered my stern expression and sighed loudly. “Fine. Anyway! I don’t have time to argue about this. I have a date with my hot footballer. Have fun, lovebirds.”
“What was all that about?” I asked as he strutted away after blowing us several kisses.
“Bennett. He’s a guy on the football team Nic likes, so Ander and I gave them a little nudge. I think everyone deserves to be as happy as we do, don’t you?” JJ gave me one of his sunshine smiles.
“Yep. Now, come here and kiss me, and then I’ll tell you what the vice chancellor said.”
“I assume from the look on your face that it’s good news.”
“Very.” Sliding my arms around him, I pulled him into me. “I’ll tell you all about it after you give me that promised kiss.”
Gripping my shoulders, he angled his head forwards, our lips brushing in the lightest touch. “It’s a deal, Dr. Wilder.”
We kissed, bathed in sunlight, out in the open for anyone to see.
No more hiding. Now, everyone would know that Joshua James Everett was mine.

“Ready?”
“Kill, I’ve been ready for three days now. Let me see.”
Killian’s warm breath skated across my ear. “I’m a bit concerned I’ve made too much of a big deal out of this. It’s nothing much, honestly. It’s just?—”
Wrapping my fingers around his hands, I peeled them away from my eyes, blinking as I adjusted to the light.
Killian’s once-sterile flat had become a home.
A collection of books in varying colours and sizes filled a shelf. A large potted plant stood tall next to the TV stand. The sofa had new cushions and a throw, and under the window…
“You like it?” Killian led me over to the gold brocade chaise longue, a creamy blanket shot through with threads of gold neatly folded at one end. It was the perfect height to recline on, looking out of the window at the streets below. “I asked G for advice, and she suggested one of these. I picked the colour because it reminded me of you. My sunshine. You can sit here and people-watch or whatever you want to do.” He cleared his throat, shooting me a smirk. “Christen it, maybe.”
