“Look, Nora, about—”

“SJ, I’m sorr—”

We both speak at the same time, our words hushed and hurried. I chuckle, and she giggles. Being the gentleman I am, I gesture for her to go first. She seems nervous judging by the way she shifts her weight back and forth and toys with the ring on her finger.

“SJ, I’m sorry for eavesdropping. I shouldn’t have invaded your privacy like that, and I feel terrible about it.”

She’s worried about eavesdropping. I’m more worried about how I’ll act normal around her when I know what her perfect breasts look like. We’re definitely not on the same page. Her nervous and worried expression pulls at my heart. All I want to do is set her mind at ease.

“Nora, don’t worry about it. I wasn’t mad. I was just trying to mess with you.” I chuckle at how my plan backfired on both of us.

She toys with the ring on her finger again, “So…you aren’t mad?”

“Not at all. I’m more worried things will be weird between us now. I promise I didn’t see anything…” She quirks her eyebrow because she knows I’m full of shit. I decide to amend my statement because I don’t want to lie to her. “Well, maybe I saw something, but it was very brief, and I promise to never mention it again.”

She snickers as she crosses her arms over her chest. “I swear, that was just instant karma, my punishment for eavesdropping. If I hadn’t been listening to your conversation, I wouldn’t have flashed you. This is all on me, and once again, I apologize. I’m sorry I subjected you to that.”

A deep, hoarse, disbelieving laugh leaves my lips. She talks like it was the worst experience of my life. Like she scarred me.

I smirk. “There are worse things to accidentally see. In fact, your breasts aren’t even on the list. It’s far more likely they’re on the ‘best things in the world to accidentally see’ list.”

I can’t help myself. I don’t like her talking down about herself. She should be proud of her body. A body that she has honed and sculpted over the years from hard work and dedication.

It’s hard not to appreciate it.

Chapter 10

Nora’s Knight

Nora’s roses rest on my lap as I watch the streetlights pass by in flashes while we weave through the city streets. It’s been days since I’ve gone anywhere with her, careful to always stay a respectful distance behind. After all, princesses always come before others, even their brave knights.

I allowed myself to get too caught up in her beauty at her last performance and was nearly exposed. For a moment that night, I thought the time was right, but it wasn’t. The time isn’t right now either, but I’d like her to have these roses. She’ll appreciate the gesture. She’s likely wondered where I’ve been, if I’ve forgotten about her, about us.

A smile spreads across my lips at the thought of us. It isn’t easy being apart from her for long periods of time, but soon, I’ll rescue her, and she’ll be safe with me forever. This is the first show in a long time that she’s been in my city. It makes me giddy to know she’s so close.

A small, excited giggle slips past my lips when I think about her being in my hometown and all the things I want to show her. The driver’s eyes find me in the rearview mirror. I return my face to stone, unwilling to share the happiness I feel with a complete stranger. My scowl promptly halts the driver from staring at me in the mirror any longer.

The car slows to a stop. I’m wearing my favorite hat tonight. I pull it tight down on my head, counting on the wide brim to partially conceal my face. I open the door and step out onto the sidewalk without a word to the driver. I’ve already paid for my trip through the app, so there’s no need for anything further. I shut the door and walk toward the shadows where I’ll wait. The driver wastes no time pulling away from the curb.

I’m close enough to Nora’s hotel to see it, but far enough away to not be noticed when she comes out. As I stand here waiting, holding her beautifully dried roses, I feel a giddiness about seeing her. Shifting nervously from foot to foot, I glance down at my clothes and realize there’s a smudge of something on my slacks.

Fuck!

I look around to see how I can correct this. There’s a little market on the corner. I could hurry in to use their restroom and clean the spot. As I turn to walk that way, I notice movement in front of Nora’s hotel.

Like being drawn by a magnet, my eyes immediately snap to her. Nora exits the front of the hotel, and I sigh in both happiness to see her and also sadness at my poor appearance. Realizing there’s no time to fix the blemish on my pants, I reroute, slowly moving through the shadows toward the hotel.

She’s breathtaking in a short blue romper. Her raven hair spills over her shoulders and down her back. I so rarely get to see it down because she always has it pinned up for practice and during her shows.

My eyes rake over her body, taking in every exposed inch of her light brown skin. My heart rate picks up with excitement to see my princess, but then my blood boils when I see a large man with his hand on the small of Nora’s back.

MY Nora’s back.

Before I can stop myself, I march up the sidewalk toward them. I pause in the shadows under the last awning before her hotel while trying to slow my breaths.

Get it together, David. You’ll fuck all this up if you approach her now.

I step back further, pressing myself against the building. Who the fuck is that guy? I try to tame my anger, knowing what happens when it gets the best of me.
