Her eyebrows try to rise, but there’s way too much Botox in her forehead for them to move. I smile at her before focusing my attention back on my computer screen. While she is in Roman's office, I try to Google her, but not knowing her last name doesn’t get me far.

Oh my God! Who am I? This is not me. I don’t get jealous. What the hell, Indie? I push out my chair from my desk, grab the document Roman gave me, and head down to the accounts department. I don’t want to be here when she leaves.

I return twenty minutes later. Roman’s office door is slightly open, and I walk over to close it.

“Miss Johnson,” Roman calls me from inside his office.

I push the door open and stand in the doorway. “Yes, Sir.”

“Do you have the document signed?” he asks, looking at me from his laptop. His face is drawn. For the first time since I have worked for him, he looks tired. His features are softer and his tone flat.

I walk into his office and hand him the paper.

“Is everything okay, Sir,” I question. I’m not sure why I care, but my words come out concerning and genuine.

Threading his fingers together, he leans his elbows on his desk and regards me with a look I can decode. It’s not anger or frustration. It’s a lot like sadness. Yet that would make him human, right? And Roman is not human.

“I don’t think anyone has ever asked me that question before,” he says quietly, cocking his head to the side. His words surprise me. I was expecting him to snap defensively like he always does, but he seems sullen and vulnerable. I’m not sure what to say back, his response is more of a statement than a question. Thus, I don’t say anything at all. There is a moment of silence between us; it’s weird and uncomfortable. I wonder what Georgina said to him to change his mood so swiftly. Who the hell is she anyway? I make a mental note to ask June tomorrow.

“You can finish up early today. I have court all day tomorrow. So, I will not be in, but you have my calendar, so you should already know that,” he says it as though he is speaking to himself rather than me. He’s acting so strange. It only adds to the complexity he already is.

“Okay, see you Wednesday. Good luck tomorrow,” I respond casually, taking my leave. Just as I get to the doorway he says.

“I don’t need luck, Indie. I need a miracle.”

Chapter Twenty

Indie

“WHO IS GEORGINA?” I blurt out the moment June walks into the office. She’s in late this morning because she had to drop off some papers to the courthouse for Roman. I don’t know why he didn’t get me to do it. I’m like fifty years younger than June.

“Good morning.” June smiles at me, taking her seat. It feels like an eternity before she finally answers my question “As in Georgina Sullivan?”

I shrug. “I only know her as Georgina.”

“She’s the daughter of Max Sullivan. One of the wealthiest and oldest families in Boston.”

“Why would she come to the office asking to see Mr. Judge. Is she a client of his?” I quiz.

“Not exactly,” she vaguely answers.

“His girlfriend?”

“Not exactly.”

I frown at her.

“Why the curiosity, dear?” The wrinkles around her eyes scrunch up as she smirks, raising her brows.

I try my best to look nonchalant. “She came into the office yesterday, is all. She was actually really rude.”

“That’s Georgina Sullivan alright,” June replies quickly. “She can be difficult.”

“She comes in a lot then?”

June turns in her seat to face me, and again, she’s smiling. “No.”

I almost sigh in relief, however, I’m conscious why June is still watching me. I go to say something, but I am cut off by Roman walking into the office. It's immediately clear he is not in a good mood by the scowl on his face. He approaches June’s desk and slams a file down. June jumps in her chair at the slap of the papers against the wood.
