I don’t quite know how to respond. Here words satisfy me to my core. “Darlin, that goes for both of us. I thought you were already sound asleep,” I say, tickled to find she’s still restless.

“No…just basking in the afterglow.” Fiona twists her head around to flash me that sublime smile. “And you know what else?”

“What my sweet lady?”

“I’ve never…um…you know. I’ve never…done that to a guy before,” she replies, makin a slight gesture with her hand in front of her mouth.

“No kiddin? I don’t mean this to sound crude, but you’re a serious talent.” She giggles and reaches back to slap my arm. “I mean it,” I tell her. “And you might be interested to hear that I’ve never done that to a woman either.”

“What?” Abruptly she pulls away and looks at me. ” Are you telling me the truth Bo?” I nod fervently, and she bursts into her bawdy laughter. “Well…I’ve never really received that before, but from what I’ve heard…most men don’t possess your level of talent either.” She looks at me incredulously for a minute. “How can that be true Bo? A man like you? Surely you’ve had dozens of women…at least.”

“No ma’am. Now see, that’s where you’re wrong. Big Bo don’t go for a lot of women. I’ve only had a couple through the years, and I knew pretty quick it wasn’t gonna go anywhere.”

“Why Bo? Why would a man like you be all alone in life?”

“I guess you could say I’m too selective?”

With that, Fiona reclines again, facing me, wrapping her arms around me…piercing me with her eyes as we breathe into each other. “I am so honored to be the one,” she says with abundant feeling.

“As am I, my lady. As am I.”

“You’re such a mystery,” she murmurs to me between kisses.

“I’m not the only one. I wouldn’t have taken you for Little Miss Innocent.”

“Well you see,” she says, proppin herself on an elbow, “after being in my dead-end relationship for nine years, then getting wrapped up in the business, I just haven’t been on the market for a long time.”

“What about your wild and crazy youth?”

“Oh that…well, my parents were a little upper-crust and kept me under lock and key. I only had one boyfriend before my husband…in college. I gave him my virginity, regretfully. He was sort of a dud. Then there was a younger guy I met a couple years ago…a biker. I fell for his type. He turned out to be an actual narcissist though, so I cut him off after a few dates.”

“Aw, terrible. Terrible! A narcissist is not what a lady needs. So what about that husband of yours? Ya’ll seriously never did any ‘favors’ for each other?”

“Oh goodness no! God…no…gross!”

“Gross? You were grossed out by your own husband?”

She hangs her head like the very subject is a source of shame. “Believe me, if you met Quade you’d understand. He’s…well, let’s just say he’s the polar opposite of you.”

“Oh yeah? How so?” I fully believe her, yet I wanna hear her spell it out.

“Well Bo, Quade is a bit of a prude. Honestly…for years I feared he was gay. We consummated our marriage and that was about it. We focused on kick-starting our two businesses and abandoned the bedroom, slept in separate rooms and everything.”

“No…a woman like you? All pent up with a guy like that? Why would you do that for so many years darlin?” I can’t adequately express my shock.

“Because I wanted my parents’ approval more than anything, and he was the first thing in my life that ever made me feel like I was really getting it.”

“Oh Fiona…that ain’t right. That just…that ain’t right sweetheart. Nobody deserves to go through all that, least of all you.”

“I told you my life’s complicated.”

“Well that’s where I come in. I’ll be your knight in shinin armor. All you have to do is let me.”

She puts her head on my chest and studies me. I can see she’s takin in my words, but the sadness is still in her eyes. Like she’s had too many hard times to believe things could change now. I need to convince her, and it kills me that tonight is all I have to finish my pitch. I already know I’m gonna have to head up to Iowa and crash-land on her doorstep to let her know I’m for real. I just need to figure out how to do that without causing any more complications in her life.

Finally her eyes close and I watch her fall asleep, listen to her breathin change, as she lies tucked up under my arm… her sweet, lovely head restin on my shoulder. One more day of this. I’ve got one more day of Fiona.
