Still, he couldn’t shake the sense that something wasn’t right.

He hoped she wasn’t going to change her mind, but if she did, it was better for it to happen now. Althoughsomehow the idea of her being out of his sight, even for a moment, had flames of rage licking at his chest.

He wasn’t normally like this over women. He’d always been good-looking, and he was a wealthy man now, a combination that basically meant he could have his pick. But he’d never been interested in more than a tryst. He was usually too focused on work for anything more than that.

My body is only reacting this way because I already know sex is a foregone conclusion with her,he told himself. It’s been too long, and she smells so good. It’s natural to feel a little greedy.

But at the end of the day, he was in no danger of falling for her. After all, she was a silly little pink-haired Terran girl, desperate enough for funds that she was willing to sell the use of her womb.

She’s here because she wants a baby, his better angels whispered to him.Just like you.

He longed to glance over at her, but didn’t dare. The lust burning his insides might show in his eyes and frighten her further. He was eager to get her alone and begin filling her with his seed. Just the idea of it brought an aching sense of relief. Whatever level of intimacy was required for a transfer of his materials to her, he seemed to have gotten there in a hurry.

He thought about her still form and the film playing on the disc.

The center wanted him to romance her. And he wasn’t a monster. He wouldn’t take her unless she truly wanted him to.

Inhaling carefully, so as not to take in too much of her intoxicating scent, he readied his mind to exert its will over his body.

“Were there any questions?” Dr. Oppyx asked, her eyes dancing between the two of them.

Stark shook his head curtly, and the girl stayed silent beside him.

“Excellent,” Dr. Oppyx said with a big smile. “If you’ll exit through this door, your first activity awaits.”

He waited for the girl to stand so that his larger frame wouldn’t crush hers. She looked so tiny and vulnerable as she turned back to him, as if asking if he was coming too. He stood, loving the way his frame towered over hers.

I could keep her safe.

He had no idea where a thought like that would have come from.

Shaking his head to clear it a little, he followed her out the rear exit that Dr. Oppyx had pointed to.

Outside, he was greeted by the kind of impossibly sunny day he remembered longing for in childhood. A few fluffy clouds kept the glare from his eyes and the rest of the sky was a perfect, brilliant blue. Tall trees danced in the breeze along a road unfurled like a ribbon between the trees.

An empty hover-cart rested on the road just outside the door.

“Welcome to the Midsummer Fertility Center,” a male voice said. “I am Oberon, and I will be your host while you are here at the center.”

The girl spun around, as if she were looking for thehidden speakers. Her wondrous expression made her look like a child on Hearth Day morning.

“Your first mission is to take this hover-cart to the cabin,” Oberon went on. “When you get there, dinner and relaxation await you.”

Olivia had stopped looking around and was simply listening, a slightly dreamy expression on her face.

“Ready?” Stark asked, feeling oddly jealous of the disembodied computer voice she was so interested in.

“Yes,” she said. “Yes, of course.”

They headed to the hover cart, and Stark had just about climbed in when he realized what was wrong with it.

“There are no controls,” he said.

Olivia hopped in and felt around. He tried not to look too closely as she knelt on the floor, stretching like a cat to slide her fingers into every corner.

“Nothing,” she agreed, hopping out again. “Maybe there’s a remote motivator and we have to find it?”

“It’s not just a simple conveyance,” he realized out loud, suppressing a groan. “It’s some kind of activity for us to complete.”
