Page 16 of Finding Ava

Oh, man his voice did things to her special places.

“Why are you in the bed with me?”

“Where else would I be?”

She smiled at him, going for sweet. “In hell?”

He nodded. “That’s where I am when I’m not with you.”

She got up then and turned on him. “Why are you doing this?”

“Doing what exactly?”

She waved her hands between them. “This!”

“Admit it, Ava, it’s been at least two years since you slept like you did last night.”

She hated that he was right, so she remained silent. Instead, she picked up her towels and made her way to the bathroom. She needed another shower to get rid of his smell from her body. She’d go crazy if she had to inhale that all day.

She stayed in the bathroom as long as she could and not look like a coward. When she walked out, he was gone. Her heart hurt. That’s all it had taken to get rid of him?

She walked out of her room, down a long hall and down some stairs. Caesar followed her. There was an enormous room to her left with a table that sat at least twenty. Most of the chairs were filled with people she had never seen. Keegan sat at the head of the table. Cap was to his right.

It didn’t take them long to notice her. Keegan motioned her over to his left side and she took the empty seat, determined to eat and leave. She refused to meet Cap’s gaze. His presence never failed to throw her off balance. Better she not engage him at all.

“You hungry?” Keegan asked.

“I could eat,” she replied and proceeded to grab the last biscuit on a platter that looked like it could hold a hundred.

She buttered her biscuit, slathered some grape jam on it and proceeded to eat. She was starving.

“What are your plans?” Keegan asked between bites.

She raised an eyebrow. “Seriously?”

“Yes, please tell us,” Captain responded with a smile. “Tell us how you’re going to flee the Russians, Chinese, and various other entities searching for you, with no help, all on your own.” He sat back and crossed his arms over his chest.

She’d been against that chest just an hour ago. Sweet baby Jesus.

“I’m going to leave here in about thirty minutes, right after Caesar eats, and you know what?” She asked noticing that everyone at the table had stopped eating and was staring at her. “I’m going to leave all on my own.”

All of the men, except Keegan and Captain, decided it was a good time to vacate the premises. They scattered.

“Look, I’m not going to force you to do anything but it seems to me you’re in a pickle and that with Captain here, that pickle isn’t quite as sour,” Keegan said.

She glanced at Keegan and smiled. “You can’t force me to do anything. I’ve been running on my own for two years and I’ve gotten really good at it.”

Captain snorted. “Until you weren’t really good at it and they found you.”

She tossed her napkin on the table and glared at Cap. “I managed to evade you.”

“Semantics,” Cap told her. “Look, if you’ll just give me a few minutes of your time I think I can convince you to stay with me.”

She flinched back. “With you?”

He nodded. “Just let me talk.”

She waved him on. “I’m going to do something you didn’t do for me. Cap, you have the floor.”
