Cap barked out a laugh. He held his hands up. “Sorry?”

She’d dressed in the bathroom and had a towel on her wet hair. Her jeans were a little baggy but her hips still beckoned his hands. Even though she had on a bra he could still see the outline of her nipples against her t-shirt.

“No you aren’t,” she said mournfully. “What do you want, Cap?”

He almost said ‘you’ but cut it off at the last second. “I want you to be safe.”

“Let me guess—you think I’ll be safest with you?”

He nodded. “Yeah, I do. I know I can keep you safe. Me, Scope, and Holland are your best bet.”

“And why is that?” Her tone had an edge of snark to it and he almost laughed again.

“I could list out all the reasons but suffice it to say, you won’t be alone anymore. We’ll cover you. I know who’s after you and we have a plan to take them down.”

“So that was what you were meeting in the war room about?”

“Yeah, Tex and his SEALs friends are going to help out on this end. But I need to get you on my turf and that’s why I want you to come to Chicago with me.”

He had his fingers crossed this would be easier than he was thinking it would be.

“It seems to me I’m just pointing a gun at my own head. They’ll know I’m with you and it will be hella easier to find me,” she said.

“Look, they’ve got a bead on your location even now. We need to pack up and leave as soon as possible. I won’t let you leave without me. If you want to go it on your own, I’ll follow. But at least in Chicago they’d be on my ground.”

She bit her lip and Cap almost groaned.

“Okay,” she said with a shrug.

“Okay?” To say he was surprised was an understatement.

“I’m not stupid, Cap. I know I can’t evade them the rest of my life. I just hoped there was a way to stay safe without you in the picture.”

“Ouch,” he said with a smile.

“Stop smiling,” she cautioned him. “It won’t be easy. I won’t be easy.”

He shook his head. “Never thought you were.”

“This is professional. I have some money squared away in an overseas account. I can pay you for your time and effort.”

“I’m going to try not to be offended you offered to pay me for keeping your ass safe,” he told her, still trying to suppress a grin.

“It’s not just my ass you need to worry about.”

“But it’s a mighty fine ass,” he told her then ducked because she threw a pillow at him.

She huffed. “See that’s why I’m talking about. You’re going to do everything in your power to make this personal between us.”

He walked to her then, getting so close that if she took a deep breath their chests would be touching. “Ava, I plan to make it as personal as I can possibly get it.”

She looked up at him then, green eyes spitting anger. “If you think I’m going to sit around and take your shit, you’re wrong. I’m not the same girl I was two years ago, Cap. I remember how badly your betrayal hurt me and I won’t go through that again.”

He pushed a strand of hair behind her ear, taking time to draw a finger down her soft cheek. “I know you see it as betrayal. I even understand why that is. But Ava, I’m coming for you again—heart, mind, body and soul. So do whatever you think is necessary to hide from that. I’m going to win this game you insist on playing.”

Her eyes went round. She opened her mouth, but nothing came out. Good let her stew on his intentions.

She crossed her arms over her chest and glared at him. “It’s not a game.”
