He got in her face then. “You’re damn right it isn’t. I’m talking about you and me, together. Nothing about that is a game to me.”

She growled and he was on her that fast. He went for her mouth and pulled her body closer to his. She pulled away for a millisecond, their gazes met, and then she was giving as good as she got. Mouths and tongues twisting and tasting. He pulled her up and she automatically wrapped her legs around his waist.

He grabbed her hair and pulled her head back, going for her throat. He placed stinging, biting kisses along the smooth column of her neck, raining more kisses along her collarbones. She squeezed him with her legs, and he groaned. He found her mouth again and went back in for seconds.

Her hands buried in his hair, tugging and pulling. The sting of it ratcheted up his desire. She tasted of vanilla, smelled of vanilla, and he wanted to inhale her whole.

Then she pulled away from him and pushed against his chest.

He was breathing like a racehorse after a run. “I won’t apologize.”

“You wouldn’t mean it if you did,” she whispered as she swiped her tongue along her bottom lip.

“If you keep doing that, I’m going to find another use for that tongue.”

“Keep your hands to yourself, Cap,” she told him. She waved at his lips, “And those too.”

“No,” he responded.

She turned away from him then. She was running while standing still. He’d allow it for now because they needed to get on the road but pretty soon, they’d have a reckoning, and he would come out the victor.

“I’m going to round up Holland and Scope and we’ll be on our way. I think Melody left you something outside the door,” Cap told her as he turned toward said door. “Remember,” he said as he twisted the knob, “I will keep you safe.”

“If I believe nothing else that comes out of your mouth, I believe that.”

Her words stung, but he understood. To her, it looked like he’d completely betrayed her two years ago. Cap supposed he was lucky she believed him about her safety. He wished she had stayed and listened to him. There were still things he needed to tell her. But it could wait until they made it to Chicago.

“I’ll see you downstairs in a few,” he said and shut the door.

Cap took a deep breath then and headed downstairs to talk to Tex. With Tex’s and his friends’ help Cap had no doubt this was a fight he could win. He’d do anything to keep her safe.

Anything.

CHAPTER SIX

Ava washed her face, put her long hair up into a ponytail and motioned for Caesar to follow her. Her beloved pit bull did just that and when they stepped outside the room, Holland was leaning against the opposite wall.

“You here to make sure I don’t run?” she inquired.

Holland shook his head and pointed to the big backpack beside the door. “Nope, I’m here to carry that for you.”

“Oh, well, thanks.”

He chuckled and picked up the large pack. “Melody said she put everything you should need in here and by the feel of it she didn’t skimp. Do you have your charger for your earbuds?” he asked.

She patted her pocket and nodded. “How are we getting to Chicago?”

“You’re going with us?” he asked in surprise.

“Yeah, Cap didn’t tell you?”

“No, he just said, and I quote, “She’s still a runner.””

“He thinks he’s funny,” she said.

“No, he was being dead serious.”

She cocked her head. “So you are here to keep me from running.”
